Back on 4-5-09 'Deadman' posted a thread where he had engineered and built a subwoofer box for the SRT. Just wanted to thank him for posting the dimensions. I built one this evening and mounted a 6" Kicker but plan on changing to an 8". Thanks 'Deadman':)

It took me 4 hours but it was worth it.

The best place to put a sub in an SRT is in the passenger floor board...period.
Unless you're just looking for looks and not performance.

Looks good but what are the specs?

What's the driver you got there? Got the specs? What's the box volume? I've searched Parts-express.com and others for years trying to find a better combo that what I've got...

The sub I have is a Kicker 4ohm 6" but I'm going to use an 8" like Deadman used. I'll go back to Deadman's original post and see if he has specs. He was ectremely happy with the sound from reading his post.

The box calculates to 360 Cu. in. or .21 cubic feet. Pioneer calls for .40 c.f. but the box they make and reccomend is only .16 cu. ft.

I'd be happy to if I knew what the space requirements were. If someone can send me a GTS's sub box I'm sure I could figure it out. I'm going to try mine tomorrow and will let you know what I think. I installed the 6" Kicker in my plastic OEM sub box and it vibrated like crazy and sounded like crap. Hopefully the mdf box will handle the new sub.

I have plenty of wood left if someone wants one.

Looks great :2tu: now you should make one for a GTS and start selling them:D

Here is another photo from 'Deadman's' post showing the box installed with a Pioneer 'shallow mount' 8" sub.

Kelly is absolutely right. You can't see it at all. Everyone used to get in my Mamba and ask me where it came from. It doesn't take much firing against the floor in that small of cabin to make it sound much bigger than it is. I completely disconnected that garbage between the seats.

Where is it located and what shape is it and how big is it? Is it for a 6" or 8" sub? I'd like to try one. I just need to make sure a passenger still fits. Let me know.
Thanks

It is for an 8. Imagine where your feet go, it is straight up and down so it looks like the floor board. The box is fiberglass on the back and the top if I remember correctly. Custom Sounds down here did the box and kept the dimensions and MDF templates to build more.

So if I'm hearing you correctly it goes at the end of the footwell and the speaker fires straight at you. I'll check it out and see if a long legged person can still fit. That would sound great coming from there. I can always cover it with plastic and make a fiberglass or cardboard pattern/mold for one. I do want to keep mine as original as possible but doubt you'd even see the speaker you're refering to. Are you using the stock amp or aftermarket and where did you locate it?

Thanks for all the feedback.

Not a lot of room in the floorboard area. I'd be worried about taking away leg room and still fitting a passenger without them being very uncomfortable. Anybody have any pics of one of the installed? Did you still use a shallow 8, or is there room for a conventional 8?

Sal,

Hold off on the PM I just sent until we get some more info on the floorboard location. I may see if you can build me one of those instead. :)

Can someone post pictures of this footwell mounted sub-woofer? Specs would be great as well.
Thank you

Sub faces toward the firewall, not at the person. My "passenger";):rolaugh: was 5'5", and she had plenty of room. Obviously if you are hauling guys or big girls, you wouldn't like it. I think you lose all of six inches or so of room, which may be more than you want to give up.:lmao:

You wouldn't have photos of the box would you? And yes I have some tall friends and one 'big' girl has long legs.

So it fires toward the firewall? Is there a way for the sound to deflect back out?
I know bass sounds better when it has some room to bounce around, verses just firing into open air like the stock location, but I'm trying to see what the real advantage of firing into the firewall from the footwell is.
Is there anyone that has tried both the shallow 8" in the stock location and the footwell location that give some feedback?

Here are some links. Mine was not nearly as bulky due to using fiberglass and going up behind the dash for more airspace. I wished I had pictures for you, just this one with Eutopias in the door.

New stereo - Viper Alley - Dodge Viper Forum (look at the passenger footwell on this picture. You can't even see the box. This is very similar to what was in my car.)

Dodge Viper Custom Install (again, much bulkier than necessary and firing the wrong way)

Go hold a piece of cardboard in front of the crappy little center mid/sub in your car. It will sound substantially better, even in free air form than it does as it sits. Bass needs a reflection point, and hitting the firewall works, and works well. With a sub facing toward the passenger, you have no reflection point, and you hear cone distortion, something you hear from that little crappy thing between the seats.

Tucker,
Thanks for all the links and info. I have a question though, How did they get the signal and speaker wires from the passenger compartment into the trunk. I really want my equipment in the trunk of my 03.

Do you think if we used the stock location but fired the sub backwards it would increase the sound? Maybe port it through one of the holes. This may also be a good location for some rear speakers instead of those little turds behind our heads.

Thanks again.:)

TowDawg,
It looks cramped to me but I'll do some measuring. I have a complete Viper frame sitting here so I can get a good fit of whatever we decide to do. I was also thinking about hanging a box under the dash on the passenger side. I'll let everyone know what I come up with.:)

Pretty easy job. You are going to have fits with it if you don't pull the seats. Look at the last link. I had the same little 500/5 JL that JustChris (RIP) was running. I sold an SRT to Rockstar on the Alley with a similar setup, and I think he was pleased. Look at the last link I posted with the seats out. There is a ton of room for wiring there.

Thanks. As JonB would say 'The year matters'. The RT looks like it's possible but not the Gen 3. I'll take a look but when I had the seats and carpet out of mine there was no passage way to the trunk that I saw. I'll have another look when I pull my bulkhead to mount this box. The trunk tub seems to be completely seperate from the cabin with the gas tank in between. I guess I can always go around the tank from the underside of the car.

I had the same car you do. It is absolutely possible as it was done in two of my SRT's. The tank is there, and you can easily go around it. The link I posted was an SRT with the amp mounted in the trunk.

I'm going to remove the bulkhead and figure out how they did it. Thanks again for your time and the information.

Sal, if you are stumped, I will put you on the phone with the people who did mine. They are very good guys, and I couldn't have been more pleased with the sound.

Thanks Tucker. I appreciate it and may take you up on it. I checked it out today and they could habe run the wires around the conertible top / under the trumk lid. Otherwise they are exposed to the elements under the car. I looked at the frame I have here and I can confirm there is no passageway to the trunk from the cockpit. Under the trunklid should be fine as long as I seal the wires where I'll have to drill.

I also made a template for a box in the passenger footwell. There is some room for a box even for me and I'm 6-2. I'll do a mockup and post results. Thanks for the heads up on that location.
