I am having a Paxton Novi 2000 put in my 06 GenIII. I just spoke to a expert on Vipers and he is not a big fan of the superchargers.
He said for about $1,200 I should have changed the gear ratio and would have gotten the same power through all 6 speeds. Then he went on to tell me all the down falls of the supercharger. Ex. changing your plugs every 3000 miles, etc, etc. Is there any positive side to this? Did I make a MAJOR mistake.

ehm... durrrr what?

Take advice from people who actually understand what they are saying, not just regurgitate things they hear elsewhere.

Gears will make a car FEEL faster than it is, and more easily apply a given amount of horsepower to a particular range of speeds. They do not, actually increase power, and in fact, will cost you horsepower.

That's not to say they aren't a good idea in many cases, but they should be considered application specific.

What is TT?

Twin Turbo....seriously if you are asking this question, you need to do a lot more research yourself besides talking to a Viper "tech".

I have driven my supercharged 06 for 2 years. Yes I maintain my car well but so does every other Viper enthusiast. I have gears and a paxton and it runs like a ***** ape! Here is a video of a 2009 ACR owner when he rode in my paxton viper. You can tell by his comments that he never expected the car to be this powerful...

it sounds like a SC is not for YOU.

Sounds like the only mistake you made is whomever you are having install it --- if they have the same feeling as the so called expert.

Make sure the car gets dyno'd.

Please name the so called expert. Your posts suggest that you do not have enough basic knowedge to be doing what you are doing. So what I suggest is that you join the VCA and then you will be able to access the huge amount of information on this subject in the archives of this site including the names, addresses and telephone numbers of those who really are Viper experts. It will be the best money you ever spent on your Viper.

Wow. Sorry but I thought you were posting on the alley were people told you to see tator?? You did not?

Gears are not even close to a supercharger LOL. My paxton car is the best car I have owned to date and that even includes some TT Vipers.

I spoke to Chuck. Very nice and knowledgeable man. I didn't have time to take it to him but he did tell me a lot of things. I trust the guy whose doing it. And by the way he's not the one who was against the supercharge install.

Thanks Mbccenter for the advice. I didn't know if I should change the gears or not. I called the mechanic and to change the gears 3.55 cost $1,600. He also said to drive the car first and then see if I want the gears.

The grears change will bring on the boost for your paxton faster but I don't like the rpm change it makes in 5th and 6th gear. Try it with just the paxton first then make a change if you want tom bring on the boost faster. It you just want more power than you will have to build the motor. I just posted a Video here of my Paxton SRT :)

I would have made the time to take it to him if he is somewhat local!!! I'm in MA and people drive 4-5 hours without a thought for him to work on their Vipers and he has customers that drive from Canada for service. I would get your car back and go to a real specialist! I do not have a SC on my Viper but I was strongly considering Sams Yellow RT not long ago, he has decided to take it off his car. The SC is for some people and not for others. I decided it was not for me. Gears are called the poor mans SC, does not make your car faster just fun as hell compared to stock and will feel like you added more power when in fact you did not. Really sounds like a SC is not for you IMO.

I bet that mechanic is 1 of those mechanics that endorse those cpu fan electric superchargers as an alternative to a real supercharger.

Sorry shameless plug here. You should have bought my 06. Already supercharged and it has a built motor with forged internals. Its fast and has been worked on by the best - Dan Cragin, Chuck Tator, Doug Levin.

DONT do gears AND a blower....If you want to save $7K+, just do gears, and accelerate almost as fast as a blower, but top-speed limited at 160mph. I call gears the "poor mans supercharger",,, gears dont make power, but re-gear the power you have, into 6 useful speeds, and faster braking. Blowers can be a HEADACHE....gears not. And the $7000 is still yours.

Too Bad TATOR is not your installer.......

.

Hate to disagree with Jon, but past the 60', if drivers are equal, the S/C car will walk a geared car bad.....................:drive:

Super charging is a safe and reliable power producer as long as it's installed properly and TUNED PROPERLY and as long as you don't exceed the engine's internal components and your DRIVING ABILITIES and KNOWLEDGE. Better be careful and learn to control what you have.
