I thought I'd heard that lack of heat from a heater is a sign of a failing waterpump on the Viper. Anyone know why that is and if it's true.

TIA,
Carl

yeah...but the car doesn't run hot, nor are there any other symptons. It's just weird that I get little heat from the heater (not that I need any but I checked it the other day)

On my other cars, I used to check the "weep hole" on the water pump to see if there was an impending failure.. A wet hole was bad :dunno: so to speak...

Not sure if these vipers are the same.....

no waterpump and the engine will overheat very quickly, which can cause engine damage if left to cook...

when you say the car ' doesnt run hot' do you mean the engine isnt reaching operating temps? as well as no hot air

thermostat ?

As long is there is coolant the gauge should respond regardless of the condition of the water pump or t-stat because of the location of the sending unit.

Put your hand on the upper radiator hose. It is only hot if coolant is circulating. Same goes for the hoses to the heater valve I mentioned.

Engine runs normal temps like it always has. Just noticed that the heater doesn't blow any warm air. Heater valve works. Just remember hearing that no heat in heater was impending doom for the water pump. Normally I don't change things until they fail, but I'm going to the track in a couple of weeks and it will be on the warm side. I'm tempted to fix before failure this time if it's a big concern. Otherwise, I'll just go and do what I do normally...watch the gauges closely

Are you sure you have the heater on heat? I know it sounds stupid, but the Viper heat controls aren't the same as on most other cars. You can have the selector on outside vent with the temp knob turned all the way to heat but you'll still get cold air. The selector has to be on the footwell selection to get heat. Am I right about this guys?

My heater also seems to not blow very warm?

Will be watching this thread.

Last year my car was getting very little heat and it turned out to be the thermostat. The engine temperature was normal also. I had my car at Tators for the headgasket upgrade and he told me the thermostat was stuck. So, he installed a 180 degree thermostat and now all is well.

Trademark water pump issue will be that your gauge will peg over 250 and if you get the revs under 1500 or so the temp will fall. If you rev over 1500 or so, the temp will spike...until the impeller simply gets to the point where it just spins on the shaft. regardless. That will only take a couple of heat cycles. If it sits overnight, it will function OK until the engine heats-up and the revs force the impeller to slip on the shaft yet again...and so on. The lack of heat is common. I can't get much out of mine either unless I do what cayman does...and I have a 170 degree t-stat and a fluidyne radiator.

ok...thanks...

I've only run the heater at the track on a few occasions on really hot days. The other day I turned it on just to see and no heat came out that I could feel. I'm thinking all is fine as it doesn't run hot at all in traffic.

I would still be concerned why my heater don't heat.
