I am not aware of any annual "taxes" for a privately owned, personal use car. There is an annual registration fee. Insurance varies in price quite a bit depending on age, driving history and location. There are also insurance companies that limit who they cover based on income and net worth factors which, under some circumstances, provide better rates to multi car situations because they limit their risk pool.

Taxes vary from state to state. Insurance varies by provider. Where I live (Iowa) The registration on cars is 5% of the assessed value of the car (not what you paid for it). Sales tax (one time tax when you buy the car) can vary from town to town depending on levies. In my town it's 7%. :omg: I have Statefarm insurance and pay about $578.00 USD a year. ($2,000.00 deductible).

Hi Casper. That level of annual tax for a privately owned vehicle would not stand a ghost of a chance of being enacted here now but the way things are going , it could change in the future.

Maybe it will, maybe it will not. But in the meantime you will have some of the best food, wine, clothing, glassware, expresso, etc. in the world.

Counties in VA stick you over $2k personal property taxes each year on a 2010 ACR before you can get your regular registration to get your tags.

On a personally owned and personal use vehicle? If so, that is outrageous. You have my sympathy.

Arkansas charges you a personal property tax on each vehicle. Don't have a breakdown handy; but it costs us about $3k for four vehicles annually. Some other states roll it into your registration fees as our annual renewal license fees are $25.00 and the tax is separate.

Move to Arizona. Registration is high. 280ish for a year for my 04. But it goes down every year til it's next to nothing. No property tax on vehicle. Plus no sales tax when you purchase a car from a private party. I've lived her almost three years and have been buying 3-4 vehicles a year just cause it costs nothing and selling them when I get bored. Then I get a refund on the registration I don't use.

do you want exchange with me? :2tu:

By the way..
When you buy a car (new or used is same) here pay much money...For example..for Viper the cost of owner change is about 1700 usd..It is indipendent with real car's quotation... We can pay 1000 usd with old car buyed for 2000 usd...
Medium Insurance for Viper is 5000 usd...

For all this tax that i'm seeking 1st gen 1993 and 1994...because if your car is 20 y.o. i can register it like historic vehicle and i'll pay "only" 1200 usd for year...but i'll have limited kilometres for use it..

Do you believe me if i tell that we have 945 govern members that rules the country and their single net worth is such as Barack Obama's salary? Plus incredible benefit...free cars, free house, free health care, free food....945 member excluding regional and single city political member, secretary, staff, etc.(about 5000 persons)

But our average annual salary is 26000 usd...
Sales tax (here it called V.A.T. or I.V.A.) is 22%...

Sorry..i don't want became Off topic....

Here in Belgium For a Gen 5, the first time you pay 13 600 $ just to get the car on the road, then every year you pay about 5 700$ road tax. Don't let me start about insurance...

For once I don't feel ripped off as a Canadian. I pay the $80(ish) per year for licence plate registration. I have my viper insured through a collector car insurance, full collision coverage (with $100 deductable) for $375 a year. My GTO with the same insurance company is $125/year.

Which province are you in, and who is your insurance company? I am in BC and pay about $1800/year full coverage. That is discounted 40% as well for years of claims free driving (the largest discount offered)
Please let me know who carries your policy as I'd like to get a quote from them for my cars.

sure. The vehicle has to be 15+ years old (and unique) to qualify for collectors insurance. It is through competition insurance in Edmonton, but I think there are other offices. http://www.competition.ca/ then click the "collector vehicle insurance" link. They couldn't come close to my current rates for my regular vehicles and house, but their collector insurance is an amazing dead. I was paying $1200 a year, and once it his 15 years old they insured it for about 1/4 of the price

I live in Edmonton (see under my user name)

I contacted Competition but they only write policies in Alberta. You may be getting an awesome deal but not worth what you have to put up with!!

But they rip you off when buying the vehicle. Here in BC, we pay between 12-15% sales tax for ALL vehicles (used and new, private and dealer), so for a new Viper, that could mean more than $20k just in tax! I would love to buy a car at the listed price, without having to invest a small fortune in taxes :(

I don't know much about European countries or Canada, but in the US, most states will get you one way or another.

If it isn't automotive sales tax, it's title and registration fees, if not it's ad valorem tax, if not it's insurance rates, if not it's sales tax (in general), if not it's state income tax (they just begin to take from you before you begin to buy anything), if not it's property/homeowners tax, etc.

In the end, you will pay one way or another.

Ya, I got lucky when I imported my GTS. I only had to pay 5% GST because Alberta doesn't have a provincial sales tax
