Tax assessment '94 RT/10: $46k!!!

I just received my yearly tax bill for my '94: $1,000! The town appraised it at $46,000!

I knew the gen 1's would appreciate

Guess I'll be down to City Hall to fight the revenoooooers.

Am I missing something? Why do you have to pay yearly tax on your viper?

Some towns and cities in Ct., including mine, impose a yearly tax on motor vehicles that are privately owned. So not only do you pay a sales tax when you buy the vehicle, you have to pay a yearly tax just for the privilege of owning the vehicle. Any vehicle. Every year.

They must've gotten our tax bills mixed... my '01 RT/10 was assessed at $27K.

Wow, and I thought the 1% yearly county property tax I have to pay on my ski boat was outrageous... a car tax is even worse. Adding CT as a state I'll stay away from.

I live in Haddam (just south of Middletown in Middlesex County). I called to get information to appeal, and was told they do appeals in September,but I have to pay at least 75% now. If I lost the appeal, I would have to pay the other 25% + a penalty!

Better to pay it all up front and get reimbursed, I think. It seems like a slam-dunk appeal, but then again, we ARE talking about the government. Sheesh.

Most towns also have sewer use tax in CT as well...and let's not forget the state's gas tax at 26 cents/gallon.

Most states/cities/localities have a tax on vehicles. Some of you probably have it and are not realizing it, as it is often buried in registration fees, etc. If you only pay ~$50 a year for your license plate, ~$30 a year for a vehicle inspection (and/or emissions), and have NO other gov't fees related to your vehicle, then *maybe* you aren't paying a yearly vehicle tax of some sort. But if you are paying hundreds a year for your vehicle in gov't fees in some form or fashion, whether as a tax, a fee, or whatnot, you have a vehicle tax. The confusion arises because each state, locality, etc. has different nomenclature and different ways of grabbing your cash, but regardless, most do grab it.

I almost think maybe i should keep my mouth shut!!! The town of Berlin,CT only assessed mine at $14,540!!! with taxes due for this year of $413.00. Not too bad but I have been paying this town yearly taxes on this car since 1996!!! Back in the day they were well over $1300.00 per yer and most recently had come down to around 800.00 per year but this year.... this is great!

So, let's say your average was $850 over ten years: $8,500 you paid in excess of sales tax, luxury tax, the sales tax on the car, emissions fees, and the income tax on the money you made to pay for the car. And you are happy about exactly what part of this???

The property tax ***** but it doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I have to pay to use the toilet....sewer use tax.

Paying taxes does not bother me near as much as what they do with the money after it goes out my door. If I could actually get some level of efficient benefit from them, I'd pay more. As it is, they waste over half of everything you give them on bureaucracy and protecting useless positions within their departments.

Tolls...the current crop of geniuses in Hartford want to resurrect the tolls in CT. The other tax that local towns have been adopting and has been spreading like wildfire is capital asset tax. If you work out of the home or have a home office, business, etc. we're required to pay capital asset tax on things like computers, machinery, etc.

My town in particular has a decent mill rate on property taxes but education is a killer. It costs roughly $8K per student to attend public schools in my town each year. That makes up 90% of our property taxes here.

The best story I've read so far has been the cigarette tax. CT is now going after people who purchase cigarettes online out of state and avoid the CT cigaratte taxes. One couple received a bill from the State of CT last week for $9K for cigarette tax owned. That was only for one year!

My wife & I make a good living here but the southern states are looking better every day to us. Unfortunately, CT has been losing businesses steadily for as long as I can remember so the commercial tax base is dwindling putting the bulk of the tax burden on personal property.

Don't mean to get off topic or ****** about CT but I will anyway . As I meet more and more VCA members from other clubs and parts of the U.S. and they hear about the cost of living in CT its amazing to see their expressions when they here about these details.
