Spent Big Bucks on your Engine? Sorry...we can't lock your hood!

How is it that years after the first hood couldn't be locked that nobody has figured out how to provide an after market locking device that all GENI or GENII Viper owners would want to buy?

Let me see.....lock my hood for a nicley made $125 part...or just let it be able to be opened by anybody? Hmmm...l..NAH, I want to buy fancy wheels! Or maybe an expensive set of floor mats! Yea, thats it...I want Alminum Knobs and a chrome gas cap and .........

It's a proven fact that nobody knows how to open a Viper hood. Yes, even statistics show that over 80% of Viper owners cannot open their hood.

Would I buy an accessory to lock my hood? Yes. Am I really worried about some hoodlum figuring out how to open it and stealing/vandalizing anything in the engine bay. No.

When I first bought my car, I took it to a good mechanic friend to have some seal replaced. When I went to get the car, he told me spent more time trying to figure out how to open the hood than on replacing the seal :D

No alarm on Gen 1 hoods. And I've seen owners not know how to open or properly close their hoods.

Search for a very old post - Nadine had fashioned a locking mechanism using the OEM handle.

I agree totally....when I first got my Gen II, it took me hours of phone calls before I could get it open.

So, the only ones who could open the hood to steal anythings are either other (most) Gen I or II owners, or those who work on them!:nono:

The thing to do is never leave it anywhere where you can't see it or just don't leave your car unless its in your own garage!:crazy2:

Not exactly. Some genius on this forum gave a blow by blow description of how to open the hood in answering a thread about how to do it. Thread could have been started by anyone. The other members jumped all over him for doing it. Not sure if it is still up or not. It's how I learned to open the hood before I bought my car.

I'm with Damn Yankee...I'd buy this product. It's a great suggestion. Some smart people here could probably figure one out.

The problem.....someone will post "how do you open the new lock system thread"....and someone will probably tell him!

We are too trusting on this board. Bad people lurk on these sites.

Conversely 80% can't close a gen1 hood without out 2 friends and trip to a mechanic.

I dont "think" thats true on Gen 1's. I may be wrong though. I haven't tried to steal my engine recently :D


Chad: On mine, there is a switch onn the passenger side front near the radiator that I believe is wired to the alarm system if the hood is opened. I will try it tonight and see what happens. Of course, our cars are Gen 1.5, instead of just plain Gen 1, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.............

There was a thread on here from a guy that waited for 3 days to get his car inspected. Turns out that the mechanic couldn't figure out how to open the hood (too stupid to call Chrysler?) to do the safety inspection. Mechanic said the car was a POS and HE wouldn't work on it.

You could move the latch to a different spot and even change the short cable to another long cable then hide the latch. Buy two really long cables (like the ones used on my 73 Duster and use those to instal the latch inside the car.

Locking hoodpins were how we locked our hoods in the 'old days'.

I can close it....
I work on the motor and I can't lock it and I would really like to.

I think the handle relocation to the interior is the right way to go.

I'm not to worried about it. If someone stole my Roe blower (someone implied a Roe blower takes about 12 hrs to remove) they'd need the intake, belt, brackets, etc. If they took my Valve covers I'd be able to track them down and kill them. Custom Viper parts only fit on Vipers. My Vec only works for a V10.

I think that stolen Viper parts would be way too easy to track. Steal the entire Viper and throw away ALL the non-stock parts as being too easy to track and find.

Yeah, I knew alot about the general workings of Vipers beofre I got mine, but felt real stupid real quick when I was told to go open the hood of a freinds gen 2....;):D:D:D

The greatest Viper assessory would be a camera attached to the bottom lip of the front fascia so you could actually see how close you are to a parking block or curb. I saw a wireless backing camera that attaches to two screws of your rear license plate frame at autozone for $59 and started thinking....................

Maybe just some old school curb feelers on the front!

You'd be needing a lot of front cameras on my front end since it's been lowered. Might be cool if you ran over a squirrel??? Nah.

Pure Genius.... now, all someone has to do is invent a lock for the GenI/.5 doors and windows and we can all sleep well at night knowing our engines are safe from the clutches of some power crazed civic owner.. :lmao:

The alarm sounds on mine if the hood is released, I do agree that most people wouldn't have a clue how to open a Viper hood, but I would still definitely be interested in buying something that would enable me to lock it, just to be on the safe side.

I've also been trying to figure out some way of locking the slider on my Vipermania side screen... I'm still working on that one...

Couldn't the lever be designed as two components? The first being a short, narrow piece which, by itself, is not big enough to grasp and open. The second, the actual lever which fits over the smaller piece and allows you to activate the lever. You could keep the lever in the lockable, small center "glove box".

I remember opening the hood on a Gen 2 back in about 2001-2002 at the Jacob Javits Auto Show. I went behind the rope, opened the hood and everyone went nuts.

I think a lock might be a good idea, but considering the way I look after my car and where I park, I doubt anyone trying to open the hood and getting away with it. Now if you leave the car out overnight, or parked in sh**y areas, I could see setting up a lock, and no it can't be hard to do.
