I have Borla headers and nothing else. Cats are gone, muffler is sitting in my garage. While the insane loudness has been fun, I think its time to tone down the insaneness. I still LOVE the sound at WOT but the backfiring on decel and ultra loud noise when shifting at anything above 2000RPM has damaged my hearing enough. My car is running so rich I have permanently stained my bumper with the exhaust/unburnt fuel fumes. So will I come out better by:

Adding HF cats and remaining mufflerless?

Adding a muffler and remain catless?

Adding HF cats and a muffler?

I don't want to neuter the car and have it sound like it did stock. I know exhaust topics are extremely opinion based, but I'm really looking for facts on what combo will correct the running rich problem and tone down the car on decel and when I shift at above 2k? TIA!

I hear ya Chad, or in this case, I don't hear you! I went through the same thing with my exhaust when I had my 94. Sounded awesome but the noise was deafening........................literally!! It is even worse on the side pipe Vipers as you probably know. I kept a couple set of ear plugs in that car because my ears couldn't take it anymore. Happy quieter exhaust hunting, it can be a long journey.

Chad, when I installed my exhaust I got a lot of popping on decel and the Vec3 got rid of most of it. It will also help lean out your AFR and your Viper will run better. I'd do a Dyno pull logging AFR and send your sheet to Sean and see what he recommends. JonB/Sean/Belanger are all great resources on how to tone down the loudness. I've tried different combinations of cats/mufflers/cones but as Plum said everyone is different when it comes to the sound of their vipers.

Chad,

I can't hear you? Are you talking? Speak up will ya?

You car sounds excellent as is, but if you want to quiet it down a little here's a thread that does a good breakdown on the combinations you may consider:

http://forums.viperclub.org/rt-10-gts-discussions/587748-exhaust-delete-update.html

If you've seen this one already, sorry for the repeat.

The VEC would also clean up some of the richness, but I too have to clean the bumpers frequently ro avoid stainage.....removing exhaust-carrying parts will always create some nasrties leaking out.

Good luck with it.

Add two moroso spiral-flow mufflers. they are $50 each and they will quiet it down just enough. Bob's right about a VEC helping too... but that won't help the noise... just the slapping and popping.

ttyl!

I have NO Cats and just a pair of resonators at the end. That's too loud for most. But back when the HF cats were in it was not too loud but it got the point across.

Of course it's personal preference but I went with the R/T High Flow cats and the corsa cat back system. Pretty common setup, easy to do and I personally love the sound. Bearable but throaty while cruising and loud and proud when you're on her........Find some of the local guys and listen to their cars and setups.

Dude, no joke? I think I seriously have injured my hearing in one ear driving in a similar fashion. Had an INSANELY loud T/A for a few years with straight pipes. Matted it in a highway tunnel one day for some fun and the left ear has never been quite the same since. LOL

That's the side I have my girlfriend stand on.

Did you decide on doing anything with it Chad? Ideas?

Since JD's idea sounds pretty cheap, I'll prob start there and see how I like it.

Hammering the gas under bridges/underpasses/etc is addictive when you have a loud car. Its fun and scares the crap out of everyone else :D

Sounds good, I'm still really undecided on whether my car is too loud or not :D On the way home from getting gas last night, I had a new Mustang GT and some type truck rev up at me. It was nice to pop it in neutral, rev it to 5k and shut them both down :D

I have the same setup as ViperJon and really like the sound. Not too loud until you really get on it.

Just to finish off this thread (so hold off on caning me for bumping a 1.5 yr old thread). I FINALLY got around to doing something about my exhaust. I went with Joseph Dell's recommendation and went with the Moroso Spiral-flows. Bought them from Summit for $50/each and paid Meineke $70 to install them. I am extremely happy with the new sound! Instead of screaming at you like a crazy person off their meds, the car now growls and rumbles at you. The sound is much more civilized, but still sounds mean. The insane loudness was fun, but it got old. I'm much happier with it this way (as I'm sure my passengers will be). Thanks again for the recommendation JD!

What did your neighbors think about the insane loudness? That's what would stop me from removing mufflers and cats.

You are getting old Chad. ;)

I prefer the term "more mature" ;) Me...mature...righttttt :rolaugh:

So front to back, what is your exhaust setup now?

Borla Headers, Moroso mufflers in place of OEM cats and no rear muffler

What did your neighbors think about the insane loudness? That's what would stop me from removing mufflers and cats.

Never heard any complaints or compliments. I am the only "car guy" in the neighborhood, so I'm sure the others just thought it was a loud car from the factory. Plus, when just cruising at normal/slow speeds, the car wasn't nearly as loud. At idle and WOT, is when it was a little too over the top. Since I always drive slow coming into the neighborhood, the neighbors didn't get the full effect of "holy crap! WTH is that noise?"

I'm running a Dynamax Bullet straight through muffler and a moroso spiral flow on each side with nothing else. You can ask the guys that went to the Biltmore event what it sounds like.:D
