Was driving down the road yesterday at about 50mph felt thumping and saw smoke billowing from the back of the car. Pulled over and got out, this is what I saw

I was told to take these to the dealership because they shouldn't have split like this, any suggestions?

I would take them to the dealer who sold them to you. it looks like a total side wall failure.

p.s. Very cool floor what is it?

I would hope that Michelin would warranty although your dealer most likely will not, but they can play a great role in getting the manufacturer to do it. Glad you and the car survived you could have been doing Mach III and had catastrophic tire failure.

I would guess that something got kicked up in the wheel well and lodged between the shock and tire, or the battery cover. Several revolutions of the tire at speed would have been enough to gouge a circle in the sidewall cords. It could have run like that for days or weeks before catastrophic failure occurred.

Looks to me like you were driving with low tire pressure,
which is easy to do considering the size of the tires -
low pressure will not show until the tire pops from the rim.
The damage came from the rim running over the tire,
and cutting the sidewall.

I had the same thing happen recently with a pilot sport tire. Total sidewall failure. It wasn't on my Viper though. It was on my brothers Z06. I sold him a set of HRE's with brand new Pilots. He noticed a shake in the car and stop to have it checked out. That's when they found it. We were lucky.

I had worked for Goodyear and have seen this before. It is from running with little to no air pressure.

The sidewall rubs against itself causing it to come apart. Do you have rubber "dust" inside of the tire? Can you see where it was rubbing against it self on the inside of the tire? These are two signs of low pressure.

Sorry it happened.

I think you just might want to look at the SmarTire pressure mon. sys. now. It is well worth the money it costs.

Thanks for all the info. I was thinking low tire pressure too but thought I would ask. When we started the drive the car was twitchy but I just thought it was the usual cold tires on a rutted road. When I got back home I did check the other tires and their pressure was perfect so I still something like a slow leak contributed to the failure. Thanks again. By the way, the floor is from rackdeck a sponsor on this board.

Actually, what kind of digital camera did you use?

It has very good black image resolution.

If I tried to take that photo with my Kodak DC120 1.3 megapixel, the tires would be black blobs.

Brad there is no question that you had a low tire and did not know it. I had the same thing happen to me last month. I started off, got on the freeway, noticed my car was pulling when I accelerated a little. I suspected I had a low tire, and would check it out when I arrived at my destination. Well all the sudden it started as you say you're car did. I infact was driving with a tire that had 5 or 10 pounds air in it at the most. I nearly ruined the rim and was on the worst part of the freeway at one in the morning. I now have the Smart tire System, and will never own a car without it. The funny thing is, you can't just look at these tires and tell they are low, not to mention the car drives pretty good all the way down to probably 10 pounds of pressure. Well it now takes me 2 seconds to check all four tires in the car. I would say you're tire temp got up to 250 or more right before this happen. The Smart Tire system moniters the temp also. There is so much bad about something like this happening that ya just can't imagine it until it happen's. I just bought a new cell phone and it came with roadside *** . I used it since I didn't know what all was involved in changing the tire. They were out there in 15 minutes and took care of me. I had to have a friend come pick up the spare and put it in his truck. It would have took me two hours to clean all that crumbly and powdered rubber out of the car. At least with a Smart Tire System you can see how fast it is leaking down and get to where you are going, or find a good place to pull over. Got the rim repaired for $100.00, lucky on that one. All in all it cost me $500.00 in damage. Get a Smart Tire system as quick as posable.

I've been a user of SmarTire pressure monitoring system in my Viper and I highly recommend. If interested, a search should provide the details. Jon B @ PartRack had the best price.
