Put Redline MT90 fluid in my tranny today in an attempt to quiet down the loud gear noise. I drained out close to four quarts which is what I expected, but I could not even get three quarts back in the fill hole before it started flowing out (Car was very level on a lift). Do you think it was over-filled before, or do you think I did not get enough new fluid in? It's almost a whole quart disparity between the drain and fill volume. Am I supposed to raise the driver's side higher so I can get more fluid in without it pouring back out he fill hole (I guess I could just jack up the driver's side if I wanted to overfill)?

By the way. The new fluid does not appear to have helped the gear noise at all.

Also changed the driver's side door hinge since the spring flap for the stay-open detent had broken. Very straightforward job. Still want to tweek the catch latch since you have to slam and door a bit harder now, but getting the door to line up was very straight forward.

If the car is level and filled, you are safe.

It's Human nature to think more is better, but overfilling can be dangerous. If you have too much fluid...beyond the recommended amount, it can foam up. If this happens, you are loosing lubrication on the gears.

So...don't overfill it.

I too have a 1998 and went to the Gearlube fluid. It did help a little but did not fix the problem. I think I am going back to the recommended ATF fluid and just live with the NGR.

It is not NGR that I have. My tranny is silent when in neutral and idling. It is when you are cruising and right on the edge of acceleration and deceleration that it has gear whine (like a heavy truck). Unfortunately, the only post I have seen about a similar noise from someone who says their gear-like noise came after the accidentally shifted into to too low of a gear and thought they might have hurt the tranny. Hard thing for me is I just do not know anyone with a Viper to compare what I think is a very noisy transmission to whatever is "normal" (but I am going to go on a run with the AZ VCA guys next weekend so maybe I can learn a bunch there).

My tranny makes the same noise. Usually in 5th or 6th while under slight acceleration. A loud whine. I have about 10k on my new transmission.

Tranny is supposed to hold 4 qts, but I only ever get about 3 3/4 qts into mine. I would pull the fill plug again and check where the levels at now, just to reassure.

Phoenix:

don't rule out the rear end, what you describe is very similar to the sound associated with a ring and pinion that is not set up correcting or where the pattern has shifted.

YESSS! :headbang: A "reason" to get short gears.

I'd get it level again and pull fill plug and see if any comes out. Try to add more.
