Tranny fluid

What tranny fluid are you guys using in the gen I tranny. My manual says Dextron II but when I search I find ATF and 75-85 gear lube.

For what it's worth, I have a tranny out of a gen 2 (2000 I was told) behind a 5.7 Hemi in a 67 Dart and I'm running ATF with good results so far. ATF is what came out of it, so that's what I put back in as opposed to trying to flush it out and change to something else. Much easier to shift in cold weather than the heavy stuff in my gen 3, though after a few miles it warms up and starts to feel more normal. It's like stirring syrup shifting when you first fire it up under 30 degrees.

You can not use gear lube, Mopar synthetic / Castrol Syntorq or not, with the early T-56's. Paper lined syncro's in the early boxes do not like it.

Stick with ATF+4, an approved replacement for Dexron II

I've read multiple things regarding the synchro material on the early transmissions. Some say that all early T56's got paper, others say that only the Vette/GM ones did and that all Vipers are carbon. Anyone torn an old one down to confrim either way?

Regardless, MOPAR/SYNTORQ is not compatible with earlier GENI T-56's

Do you mean it is the same? Or do you mean that it fulfills the specs of the Castrol Syntorq? BTW: Which exact AMSOIL product are you referring to?

Just grabbed a quart off the shelf: Off the rear label: "Replaces Chrysler part # 4874459 (Chrysler specification # MS-9070)" so I went to Amazon and looked up that Chrysler part number " OEM Mopar 4874459 Gear Lube Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 75W85 NV4500 (MS-9070)(1 Quart/32 Ounces) $31.53 per qt.


Here's the name of the AMSOIL product: AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube SAE 75W-90 API GL-4. About $15 a qt

I checked for availability in Germany and found only one shop so far. Unfortunately, they sell it for 29,-€ per quart! So another "liquid Gold" ;-)

I find the hotter my trans gets, the better it shifts with the AMSOIL. So if you are driving in cooler temps a lot, the AMSOIL will shift harder until it gets up to temp (if it ever does). ATF-4 not the case which is maybe why its used in the newer trans?? WHo really knows. Since you have a GEN-I….try both and see what you like better.
