transmission/rear end lube

Going to change my transmission and rear end lube. What should I use. The dealer wants $25 per qt for the teansmission lube and $37 per qt for the rear end lube. Seems a little pricey for just the lube?

That sounds about right for what a dealership would charge just for the oil...that's why I changed it myself, and sourced my own oil.

Agreed that it's pricey but I personally go with the Mopar fluids. Too much going on inside those components (power-wise) to try to save a few bucks. Just my opinion...

Those are two fluids that I wouldn't want to experiment with. Too much at stake. Dont forget the friction modifier for the diff too!

I bought the Mopar lube and friction modifier from local Dodge dealer for about $40 total, 2 quarts oil and friction modifier package. That was for the rear end lube.

Yeah, I think MSRP on the diff stuff is around $25, don't remember what the trans was, but guessing it is similar. When I asked my local dealer they wanted something ridiculous like $50 per quart of rear end stuff and they didnt' even carry the trans oil. Ended up buying my stuff from VPA. Got another bottle of diff lube from Woodhouse when I swapped a diff with them for around the same price.

Had the transmission fluid and modifier changed in my 2004 (11,000 mi.) changed last October. I'm not sure that the dealer even used modifier. After I asked the service clerk if he did. He looked at me with that blank stare and said "What's that?" He asked the service manager and he said "Yes" but it wasn't itemized on the invoice. So I wonder if it was even added.

If so...Will it hurt to add more?

What's the damage to drive for a while without?

I understand that it takes a feww hundred miles to start working.

Transmission fluid does not take a friction modifier, but the differential fluid does. I don't think it would hurt to add more, but if it were me, I'd have it drained and refilled properly by someone that could remember whether or not they added the stuff.

Thanks for the correction. Yes. Transmission fluid along with rear end lube and modifier were changed. (Supposedly).

Gear lube #68003055AB was used. I don't expect that it has a modifier pre-mixed. Would it?

I just did mine a couple weeks ago. Used Mopar fluids.

No, it is not pre-mixed. I suggest you take the car back to the dealership and make them re-do it. If they refuse, contact the Chrysler regional rep and file a complaint.
