Went to see the tech who will be fixing my improperly done Recall 998 (plates are on backwards so the oil filter is trapped). He showed me his theory as to why techs do it backwards. On each triangular plate has a parts number sticker. One says right and the other says left. Those stickers are on backwards (i.e. on the wrong plates), and due to a contour in the plates, the only way they fit to match the stickers (which the techs assume are correct) is to install them backwards. Additionally, the hole in the steering rack cross-member associated with the recall is in the wrong place. Bad thing is that you cannot leave the improper plates on (I think I could fish the oil filter out of there) as they the proper positioning overlaps the improper positioning. There are no cracks evident so the fix will be easy.

Here is the good part. The invoice for the recall also indicates they did the rear recall work. But, there is absolutely nothing done in the rear. I am sure Dodge is going to be real happy to hear they were billed for work that was not done. In any event, it will be finished early next week and the tech knows of two parts cars so He is getting me a used HVAC fresh air box that got cooked by the leaking old headers.

Great news for you, gald to hear you getting help.

No matter wha the placement of the tags are, it would take an utter lack of common sense to obstruct the oil filter. Common sense must always be enabled, and functioning, no matter what you are doing.

labels! hah!

Plus, since the recall is all about the steering rack area, it is very clear that when the plates are toward the rear they have nothing to do with the steering rack.

It is the box under the hood with round hole in it that goes right under the passenger side "speaker" grill on the hood. My previous headers had a leak and were blowing out hot gas right by the front lower edge and cooked a hole in it. The part new retail is about $225 so I was going to patch it until the tech found a used one for $100.

DC released Recall 998/999 on May 16, 2002. On June 2, 2002 DC sent an amendment for the Recall 998/999 to ALL Dealers! To be attached to the Recall instructions and it says: "To all Dealers Recall package #CAAM9981, right and left side frame rail gussets are mislabeled."

This week I had to do two more Recalls that were incorrect, backwards gussets and POOR welding! That makes to date 18 bad ones and three came from Dealers that are listed on our local clubs web site!?

I now have completed 132 998/999 Recalls correctly, I might add!

"There sure are a lot of idiots out there!"

Chuck the good news is that they did the proper rivets rather than welding up front, and since they did not do any work on the rear they didn't screw that up!

I guess that's half good?

Tell your Tech that he can grind off the rivets and start over with a new kit. Don't weld close the old holes!! Have him check the cross member for proper welds! Where ever the C/M touchs the Viper should be welded [7 to 9 inchs of welding per side]!
DC will pay for the repair and this is the best part, they will charge back the Dealer that did it in the first place! :headbang:

Chuck:

Do you have any pictures you can post of this correct or incorrect installation. I'm pretty sure my installation job was done incorrectly as I have been removing my oil filter between the bottom A-Frame and frame coming out the side. I cannot load my new filter with oil as I practically have to tip it upside down in order to get it through the frames. They are riveted and not welded.

Thanks

Chuck,

If 1 day you come to california, you will have to do the recall on my 2000 GTS.

Question:

On a safety recall, how many years before a manufacturer can refuse to do it?

I asked my ford dealer to do a safety recall on my 69 Mustang and he told me that he couldn't since the kit had been NLA since, how, about 20 years!!!!!!!

I bought the viper recall kit from my friendly Jeep dealer (very cheap) to make sure that DC can't use the same excuse in 25 years!!!

Luc.

The tech doing my redo says he will be documenting the current situation, procedure and final fix with his camera so I plan on posting the pics. Regarding Chuck's comment that the best part is that DC back-charges the dealer that did the recall wrong, I think it will be even better when DC finds out the work they were charged for was never done in the rear.

Sorry to sound like a newbie, but what is the 998/999 recall? Does it have to do with all GTS's? or just a few of the years?
I'm a noob too, but searching under "Recall 998" (as suggested by Viper Wizard) found me a bunch of posts that explain that the recall has to due with cracking problems in the frame around the steering rack on certain models I believe before 2000 model year (not sure of dates since my car is clearly in the recall period).

I had my 999 recall done last year on my 2000 rt/10 wrong, when I approached the service manager at Midway Chrysler when I picked up the car he stated that was the way Chrysler wanted them put on and would not even listen to me, actually his exact words were "if Chrysler wants us to pop rivit them to the vave cover that's where we'll pop rivit them", when I phoned Chrysler Canada to explain the problem they said they would contact Midway Chrysler to see what if anything was wrong, once Chrysler Canada got back to me they said everything was fine according to the dealer, and that was it, end of discussion. Now I'am reading that Chrysler is redoing the mistakes made, what I need is info to take to Midway Chrysler in Winnipeg Manitoba to get this all straightened out,any info, recall update numbers anything, anyone has to get this all sorted out would be greatly appreciated. It would appear that Midway probably did most of the recalls wrong, as when I was picking up my car there was a 96 white rt/10 on the hoist that had the front recall on wrong, this is what alerted me to check mine out before I took it home.
