Okay folks,I can now share this project. This item was part of the goodie bag for the Winter fest party the Illinois region held Feb.14 2009.
This a pen holder with some etching on 3 sides.Fangs,Pete and the Illinois logo.
The plan was to make about 70 or so for the planned event.I made a few extra for set up pieces and basically ran out all the material that was ordered.Wow am I glad I did that, as the event was a hit and we to make a few more goodie bags that originally planned.Meaning we needed as many pen holders as possible.
So I started with aluminum bar stock that was 12 feet long.It measured 2x 2.5 x 3.75 after cutting.
I took a fly cutter on each side to make a nice machined finish, for easier polishing later in the process.
This pic is showing the cut in progress, as it seems to show the cutter stopped.Actually it was running at a 2600 rpm
After I machined all 4 sides I proceeded to start etching the sides.
Now for the fangs logo.
Now the Pete
After that process I drilled and machined the pen holder cylindrical void( hole) on top the the piece. And then I put a nice radius on the edge.As well as the top radius on 4 sides of the holder.Trying to make the piece user friendly( no sharp edges ) as well as adding a bit of style to the part.
Here is what the 3 etched sides look like before polishing.
Now the top view after hole and edges are machined.
A few more pics of machined parts different views.
I proceeded to fill the etching with black testors paint. This pic shows the Illinois side.I decided to leave the logo etching of the fangs and pete non painted..
After 24 hrs of drying time.It was off to my climate controlled high tech polishing dept.
Lots of 3M polishing pads and elbow grease needed here!
And then the finished product.
As I stated in the heading V is for Viper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So to all the people who did get this unique trinket,I hope you enjoy it and now you see the process of "HOW IT'S MADE"
I even made one custom for some guy who knows a thing or two about vipers.
