Vipers ran strong at the Vette / Viper shootout in Bradenton on Sunday Feb. 9th. Tom Welch and Lee Saunders took first and second place in ulimited with their 9 second street driven vipers, no Vettes were close. I took 1st place with my 01 GTS and Steve took second place with his 95 RT10 in Modified Viper, again no Vettes in Mod I were close. Larry Macedo of Macedo Motorsports tuned my car during the week prior to the race, adding T&D rockers, Roe clutch link and Roe cooling duct. My times dropped significantly, generally the car would run 12.4 - 12.5 at 115 mph, I ran 11.9 a 119.5 with a 1.83 60 foot, also several 12.0s' and the highest (bogged launch)12.2, but all above 117 mph. Larry did a great job sizing the pushrods and adjusting the rockers, minimal rocker noise, but it is all overshadowed by the increased throttle response and the sound of ZO6 owners stompping their feet as you leave them in the vacuum of the Viper wake. The only Vette that gave me a hard time was in the next class up, and he was running a supercharger, but he only beat me by a fender. Cudaman ( who normally drives a 2001 RT10) was racing my F-body and took Second place in Modified F-body, he broke a torque doing it, but the trophy was well worth it. Larry Macedo patched the torque arm up and we all made it backed to Orlando. Hope we see more Vipers at the next shootout.
