It is the Fisker Karma that had fire issues, not the tesla.

What year Viper? If it's a GenIII, it's a 10 year old car. If it's a GenIV, it's a 5 year old car. Compare apples to apples and put it against the GenV. Teslas look like neat cars, I'm just not a fan of battery power. Every battery powered tool I own dies gradually within a few years.

I get it...an electric car beat an American icon with the biggest gas burning , baby seal killing engine available. Sure makes for good publicity, especially to the 95% of Americans that know nothing about cars, and less about drag racing.

Neat to see the off-the-line power of the Tesla. Viper was catching up at the end.

Viper hood looks like a Gen3 when you bump up the video resolution. He has ACR canards and splitter on the front, but looks like no aero on the rear -- makes for an unbalanced car. Plus, it's a vert.
The GoPro fisheye lens also makes it look like he's farther back than he really is.
Not making excuses... a win's a win and good on the Tesla.

The link says 2005 Viper, with the Tesla running low-ish 12s @ 110-111 MPH, which makes me wonder exactly what the Viper ran. It was running it down on the big end, but didn't have enough track to do it. A win is a win, but low 12s @ 110 does not a fast car make.

I was there yesterday for some of the Tesla S's runs. The Tesla S is a luxury four door sports sedan. Its fit and finish were perfect. It has a very nice interior and all the bells and whistles one would expect on a 100K car. I saw it run a 12.6/106 quarter which for a car of its type is fast. There was also an old S10 Chevy pickup truck that had been converted to electric that ran high 120 MMPH and in the 11s. What we are witnessing is the early beginning of the reality that electric vehicles produce max torque immediately and are capable of impressive quarter mile results due to that fact. I think that we are going to be seeing more of this as time goes by. The lack of sound was a bit weird but I did not miss it as much as I thought I would. I wouldn't mind having one to drive and test for a few days. It will be interesting to see how the after market industry responds to these cars. Bigger electric engines? Superconducting wiring? The furture is here. But, I wouldn't worry about the noise emitters going out of production any time soon. LOL.

That tax credit is actually a tax penalty for the 99.99999% of people that don't buy the car at least those who pay taxes . That money doesn't grow on trees you know
Pretty impressive run nonetheless.
For guys that like to tinker, a whole new world has opened up. It looks like the hot rod world is going to start all over. Imagine a 1940 Willys coupe in the 9 second range and nobody around to throw rocks because of the noise and pollution. This is kind of like when guys thought performance was gone when fuel injection and computers came in. When we start to see 2000 H.P. electric engines the light will go on for a whole new generation of hot rodders.

People are'nt complaining about polution yet. Wait till these cars' batteries start to wear out and landfills are filling up with batteries. Like an earlier poster said, look how quickly battery powered power tools wear out.

I knew electric was going to be the big thing when I rode that roller coaster at California Adventure at Disneyland. A coaster full of people and it takes off like a bullet.

It would have been closer if the Viper guy had really got all over his car, but it was impressive none the least.

What's funny is that every time a power company needs to install or upgrade a grid with these new 200' tall poles the Sierra Club and Al Gore and their ilk are all up in arms about the heath risks of (EMF's) electro-magnetic fields but silent when it comes to surrounding yourself with electric motors on each corner of the car and sitting on a huge battery

Too many problems with batteries (mostly lithium ion) for my taste. Remember Dell's problem with their lap top batteries? and now the Dreamliner? and the Volt? and the Fisker? and the Tesla? and ....... The darn things are unstable and because they contain an oxidizer (their own source of Oxygen) they are darn hard to put out when they catch fire. It took Logan airport's fire department (arguably a pretty advanced department with high tech fire equipment) 45 minutes to extinguish the Dreamliner's battery.
when my battery goes bad I spend $100 to get a new one. Not $8000+ for the Tesla. Telsa along with all the other electric cars has a bigger carbon footprint than the Viper ever will. The proper disposal/dismantling of a battery or batteries for these electric cars is horrible. Public is mislead. On a lighter side note if that was a 1 mile race the Viper would have pasted him easily. lol

It's as much if not more fun than a viper, you can charge it up in 10 minutes or less so you can go in a 2000 miles fun road trip. I'll consider owning one.
Nothing wrong with going green and saving the planet. Unfortunately the technology is not quite there yet. Likely by the time this or other technology is there will see the largest internal combustion engine cars going for millions of dollars at auctions for collectors. I'm still young and I wonder if I'll live to see those days...

Exactly what I've been saying! If I blow up the motor in my Viper, it can be melted down and recycled. Not so with batteries. All of these Toyota Prius' are going to make a mess for our environment.
That said, an electric dragster (there are a few in progress) will be a huge advantage in bracket racing.
