Hogwash! - Just ask anyone that's trying to sell one, present company included. Resale values would need to get better to ****!

ACR Joe- Did you read the article? You paid probably around $80k for your ACR, which is almost 5 years old... therefore, at the published numbers, (52% of value), your car would clock in just below $42k. I'm sure you can find plenty of buyers at that price!

Really surprised your car hasn't sold. I really like the silver/black. If hadn't just bought my silver ACR, I would very likely pick up yours! :2tu:

Geez Joe...no luck yet? The time of year may not be helping you either. I know I haven't even thought about moving my Viper in weeks.

OK, so let's do the rough math. The car was actually $82, assuming the current value is $42 (to quote Charleton Heston "From my cold, dead hands!"), that's $40,000 in depreciation over 5 years, or $666 per month (I knew Satan had to be involved). That is one hell of a hit no matter how you slice it; inconsistent with one would expect from a so called American exotic. Face it, the market ***** and the ***** mongers that frequent this board only exacerbate the problem. Just wait till it's your turn to sell!

ACR Joe-
I was in no way implying that $42k was a fair price for your car. I was merely pointing out that the numbers in the article sort of reflect the difficulty you've been having. You say in your sig that you have a 2004 SRT on the way soon... is it that unrealistic to think that in 2009, that car may have met similar levels of depreciation?

I'm not saying I like the situation... certainly none of us want to see the effective values of our cars falling... but a free market is a free market. I'm sure there are plenty of people who, a few years ago, said that no nice Viper would ever sell for under $40k... well look at it now... for a pristine Gen I, bottom half of the 30k range is par, and in a few more years, it'll probably graduate down to high 20s.

In a few years, used SRT10s will be on the market... who will want to pay any premium for an ACR then?

Maybe someday Vipers will be seen as classics... but for the forseeable future, the market is telling us that a Viper is, in fact, a car, and subject to the same rules of depreciation as the rest of the world.

-Matt

PS- I bet you'll see a lot more interest in your car when the weather warms up. Best of luck. In the meantime, maybe we can meet up and grab a drink someday.

I wonder where they get their 5 year depreciation information for the Mini which has only been out for 2-3 years? Typical Edmunds, I have never seen anything of value from them regarding autos....

Regarding the Viper, remember the statistics are for 5 years and 75,000 miles. The statistic is probably accurate if you could find one of the few Vipers 5 years old with 75,000 miles.

Having "lost" a lot of money over the years on reselling cars I bought new after a few years is that the more options you add, the more you lose. That special leather, heated seats, upgraded stereo, blah, blah, blah...when it comes time to sell, it's just another 199_ whatever. Try to refrain from a lot of options if you want to cut your losses when you sell. Just talking in general about this topic, not about vipers. Of course, it's almost always best to buy used if chosen carefully. But then you have to wait!

Nobody can tell me what my GTS will be worth in 20 years! I don't think the word "depreciation" will be used then when talking about Vipers! In 2024, we may have Vipers that are worth 3 times what we paid for them! :2tu:

I have been around a lot of Exotic cars. I consider the Viper a very very good return.

It's all relative. Look at the guys that paid 1.2m for a Ferrari F40, sticker was about 450k. Today they bring 350 to 400. Those buyers have lost a ton of money!

You can buy a $55k SUV and in five years its not worth much.

Gen I and Gen II Vipers are OK. I am worried about the SRT.

I echo those thoughts! Morons! Anyone that is stupid enough to under sell a viper hurts all our Viper values. These people should be shot! I remeber you could not touch any viper for less than 42K. Now you can have 92-93-94-95's selling for under 30K and less. I'm talking clean title cars. It is these people that drag the price down for the rest of us. And that really, really blows.

This is the main reason that I would never buy a car new..I've always been a big advocate of buying low mileage used with a factory warranty.

I just couldn't stomach this kind of depriciation  .

Cheers
Jeff
