Viper Magazine Tech Notes/wrong answer ?

To a question about white smoke, the Team Viper Manager of Vehicle Synthesis, answered:

" White smoke...coming from the exhaust...could mean you're burning OIL..."

I never saw an engine burning oil and having whith smoke coming out of the exhaust.


Blue smoke = oil

Black smoke = gas/fuel

White smoke = water/coolant

In the question the owner stated, "I just had smooth tubes and a rear sub-assemby installed..." I think the smoke and smell was from the new exhuast system.

This topic was discussed in the past and it was stated that synthetic oil smoke can appear white. What you stated regarding color versus the source is what I grew up with as well. Unfortunately, I have no experience with synthetics and oil burning. Very few production vehicles are equipped with synthetic oil to provide real world experience. I would imagine that normal vehicles with owners that use synthetics would return to standard base stock oils by the time oil burning becomes an issue.

I think the key to that question is "...just had rear sub assembly installed." The Snake Oyl rear sub assembly is notorious for its internal coating (as shipped). This coating burns off and smokes like the devil for the first several hundred miles. I would bet this is what was causing the white smoke the owner saw.

I saw that question too. Of course it was the oil burning off the new exhaust. But geez...the Team Viper Guru has never heard of the Snake-Oyl exhaust?

I can state without a doubt that synthetic oil burns white. DOH!
