Guess my 97 GTS in the classifieds at $39,900.00 is priced a bit low huh?
Have you tried running multiple ads? Good price for the miles. I would fix the AC. People shy away when an AC system isn't working.

Auctions are the worst barometer to judge prices. Private ads, dealer ads and the auction prices need to to weighed together. With all that said I hope they are going up...

the problem with private or dealer ads is that you dont know what the car actually sold for. you may see a car advertised at a given price but who knows what it actually sold for when the negotiation begins. with places like ebay i have seen people run up their own bids and relist a week later when the buyer " had to back out due to a family emergency". with auctions at least the price is available, you just need to account for the commission on both sides.

Why is this always such a heated topic. What blows me away even more is how a small group if owners seem to want to devalue their cars. I can see buyers doing this but not owners. They have VERY low production numbers, have always been iconic and good ones are getting harder and harder to find. I see other makes of cars with similar attributes and they seem to hold their value and some even appreciate. But for some odd reason people seem to be split on the forums, some see the cars for what they are and realize they have to pay a premium for super clean low mile no story cars. Others want to point to the few cars that appear to be great deal but obviously have a story behind them or and are not in the condition they claim to be and want to lump all Vipers in that category. Yes, you can buy a so so driver in the 30's but nice Gen II's are going for 50's and in some cases 60's. I know how hard it was to find my car about 10 years ago so I am guessing it is even harder to find cream puffs today.

This was heated? If you're going to cut and paste the same comments on multiple sites at least make them appropriate to the thread.

The tricky thing with auction prices too is it only takes two people being in the same room that want a car to drive the price way up. If there was only one guy there that was a Viper fan they could have gone super low too potentially. With a dealer or private listing it's more of a "first come first serve" setup for price. Yes, there might be negotiation, but whoever shows up with money first is the one that's going to be walking away with the car, not whoever has the bigger bank account.

I used to track prices being asked at dealerships. It was very enlightening to do averages

Even region a car is being sold in can vary prices quite a bit. Did your search into the dealer asking prices in the past show any interesting trends or did you compile it that way by any chance?

You are correct, the region made a difference. It’s been awhile, however states that had year round good weather did better along with welthy population areas. It was fun for a short time, but became very cumbersome. It was fun to watch people ask for help to go check out a Viper in a northern location, as most of them seemed to have fewer miles, with the exception of garage queens in the south... what a waste. Never could find a real useful way to present it. In ten years or so, it might be interesting to see what people are asking and trends again.

Yeah, it would be interesting to chart some trends over the years to see how the car has been fairing. There are so many factors that go into private sales that I'm not sure they are really a good barometer of "value" either to some degree, especially on a low volume car. There just aren't enough data points for real statistical analysis a lot of times.

I know my car is probably worth quite a bit less than I would ask for it, but that's because I have no intention of selling it. If someone offered me $20,000 over what it's worth I would probably consider it, but even then I'm not sure I'd sell it. For others that just have to sell a car because of an emergency financial situation you can get some really good deals. Ultimately any car is worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for it.

Location is everything! A Viper in some parts of the country is worth much more than the same car in other parts of the country. Do not go by state, but rather go by region.

There was a beautiful GTS FE with under 300 miles on it that bid up to 62.5 and was a no sale at Mecum Kissimmiee last weekend.

How low is "super low" for a Gen 2? Less than 5000? Less than 1000?

To me, super low is less than 1K. Not saying 5K isn't low, but it's not the same as 500. I've had some collector cars that low, but not Vipers. I can't resist driving Vipers, so why torture myself?!
