Viper saved my life - literally

I've tried to think of 20 different ways to post this, but I just want to get it off my chest since I am so down right now.

This afternoon, me and my Viper were involved in a very serious accident on Route 1 north of Boston. Here is what happened... an accident had occured on the southbound side and the car involved had flipped over onto the northbound side. I arrived just as the police got there, and they were motioning cars into the middle lane from the fast lane. This guy in a pickup wouldn't let me in, so I had to squeeze in front of him or get real close to the cop (which I wasn't going to do), so I squeeze in front of him.

The guy starts tailgating me. When traffic opens up, me flies by me in the left lane, as did another car. I got behind the 2nd car. We were coming up on traffic slowing in the left lane and so I switched back to the middle lane. As I was passing the guy, he swerved VERY hard into my lane. I slammed on the brakes, but he clipped the front end of my car, sending me into a slide. I tried to recover, but the butt of the car had come around too much. I found myself facing the concrete median going about 60mph or so. The car hit the median HARD, and jumped up onto it. It slid down the median and I hit the concrete support base of a bridge. Then it impacted a light pole that was bolted down to the center divider (those big metal ones on the highway that are about 100' tall). The car sheared right through the light pole which toppled over like a tree landing on the southbound side of the highway (luckily nobody got hit or hit it). When I hit the pole, the airbags both deployed and I slammed into the dash (5 points saved my life here). I continued to slide down the barrier, with the car rotating, piroueting and bouncing. It continued on the barrier and hit a second light pole. This time the car caught the pole and was slingshoted across the highway, where I impacted the guardrail on the right side of the road. The car slid down the guardrail for a little while and came to a stop squished against the guardrail.

When I came to a stop, I couldn't see anything. The smoke from the airbags was filling the car, and there was coolant and oil everywhere. The engine was at redline. I shut the motor off, undid my 5-points and jumped out of the car, since I knew cars were coming and might not be able to stop.

As soon as I got out, I saw people running from the other side of the road. One woman was screaming hysterically "he's dead, he's dead". I asked who she was talking about, and she said "the driver". I said I was the driver, and her jaw dropped. I looked at the car and I can see why. The car is absolutely demolished. When I hit the first pole, it crushed the front of the car all the way back to the engine. The front clip, radiator and front frame section are just gone. The throttle bodies were bent and the cable was crushed (hence the engine sitting at redline). The hood is pretty much crushed too. The whole underside of the car was ripped up - I think the oil pan was ripped off and the transmission plate was ripped off too. The whole exhaust system is also crushed front to back. Both sidesills are demolished. Basically the only part of the car that isn't destroyed is the doors, rear 1/4 panels and the rear hatch. Everything else is just gone. There were 2 fire engines, 3 ambulances and about 8 cops on the scene. Every single one of them told me they were astonished that I was alive, and they were baffled that I was able to walk away from the accident. First thing the firefighters did was grab the jaws of life - they assumed I had to have been trapped or dead. The whole left side of the car was resting on the ground. But the wheels didn't appear to be damaged. I don't know if the frame broke, or what happened, but the tires were inflated, and the wheels weren't bent (on that side), but the car was sitting on the ground. It looked like someone picked it up and bent the whole car in the middle into a banana shape. This probably was when I hit the pole or the bridge support.

When the accident happened, the guy in the truck hit the gas and took off. Luckily there were several witnesses that saw what happened and stopped to tell the cops the story. The cops were total a-holes and seemed genuinely disappointed that they couldn't write me a ticket for something or other. I asked them to go after the other guy and they said he was "probably long gone" and since I had no plate, they had no way to get him. They said all I could do was file a report, but that it would never get solved unless the guy turned himself in. It upset me that if I were the son of the governor or someone "important", they would be all over trying to get the guy, but since I am just a regular joe, I don't count. Maybe I'm just bitter.

The car is obviously a total loss. I will post pictures from when I go to the tow yard on Monday. It is a mess however. I'm not even sure what the salvage value would be. You know those pictures that we've seen on this site of destroyed Vipers? It looks like one of those. The crashes probably belongs on "worlds scaries police videos" or something. The whole ordeal seemed to last forever - I must have been sliding/hitting stuff for a good 5-10 seconds (again, this saved my life by scrubbing off energy over time, rather than a single huge impact).

The good news is that I came out of this pretty much unscathed. I got a good gash on my head - not sure if it's from the wheel or from hitting the roof, but my face was covered in blood after I got out of the car. I sprained my left arm, and got a little graze on my right knee. I went to the hospital and I was Ok. A little whiplash from hitting the pole. I got some staples in my head but the cut wasn't bad - just bled a lot.

I want to thank the Dodge engineers for their work. This car saved my life. Everyone there who knows about these accidents like the firefighters, EMT's and cops all said I had no business being alive. I guess the fact that the car absorbed so much of the impact is why I am alive. I remember hitting the center median and thinking "as long as I just slide and nobody hits me from behind, I'll be ok". Then the car jumped up on the median and I saw the pole, and I remember thinking "Ok, I'm going to die... hope nobody finds my nudie mags I've got stashed" (or something to that effect). After the pole, I was certain that I was really badly hurt because it was a very violent crash. But I guess my natural padding (read: fat) paid off and I made it.

Dodge, I knew the car was awesome when it was good... but it was also awesome when it gave it's life for mine.

I am really bummed about the car. I owe a little money on it, and at this time of the year and given that I bought a few cars and bikes this year, I'm not able to just buy a new Viper. I would definitely want ABS this time. I might try to get a 2001 yellow/black this coming spring - we'll see. Bill Pemberton - we need to talk soon perhaps.

Right after the accident, I thought I was done with Vipers, but it's only been hours since the accident and I am already realizing I am bitten and I want another one. I guess I coudl live with a creampuff
smile.gif
.

Be careful out there folks. Buckle up and always watch the other guy. And never doubt the crash-worthiness of a Viper. I am living proof of their safety.

Pics to come soon....

Man! My blood boils right now!!! I would have shot that bast*rd! I've been tailgated by redneck truck driving 6th grade education a-holes before! I just drive real slow and they go around me..and take off.

I know how you feel about the cops and their lame excuse why they can't help you out. Cops are a-holes and have no problem saying that.

I got suckered punched in my face while in my Viper (KY Derby)and had my nose broken by some coward who ran back to his car and locked himself in. I got out and took off after him in a blind rage. (It was a good thing I didn't have my Glock in my car). The people he was with took off and the person I was with wrote down the wrong plate number...so that fricking a-hole got away. I can't help thinking of what I would do if I ever ran across this person again. All I can say is he wouldn't be standing. The a-hole was mad that an Asian guy had an American car and this punk as$ was driving a heap.

The only thing that I can think about is, that he is flipping burgers or digging ditches for $6-7 hour and that's his lame life. What do you expect from a piece of trash, to do any better?

I feel bad for you and rage too. I can relate!

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about the accident. I'd be pretty upset myself, and probably too mad at the guy in the Pickup for my own good. Hang in there with getting the insurance settled and finding a new Viper. That must have been a wild ride...

Mike, I'm so glad you're going to be ok. The stunning thing that no one else in this thread remembers is that less than two years ago, we almost lost you to a motorcycle accident. We missed you at the VOI in St. Louis. Man, your gaurdian angel must REALLY be working overtime.

My best wishes to you, and I'll be contacting you privately too.

Hi Mike,
Glad to hear you came through such an incident without serious injury to yourself or others. All because some **** got ********** that you were 15 feet further ahead of him in slow traffic.
Material things can be replaced. I hope your insurance company treats you right. Their main job at this point is to give you as little money as possible. Hang in there.

Sounds like quite an ordeal...Glad you were able to walk away from it...

I've always wondered about the safety of my Viper but it seems to have done it's job well...Maybe I need to buy those harnesses and soon...

Seems to me the driver of the truck will have damage to his truck - wonder if that would provide any kind of clue as to who he is (i.e. checking auto body shops?)

Might be a strech, but man I'd love to get my hands on that guy. I've seen way too many of those a-holes! Suprised nobody else got his plate or chased him down.

Thank God you are okay!

Some of the more aggressive plaintiff attorneys have investigators that will help you find him. I'm sure this case would be worth a fortune to one of them. Especially if there are witnesses. I just testified at a case where a guy was hit from behind by a semi. The case settled for 450K.

Hey Mike,
Glad to hear you came out of it relatively unharmed. I have to say you put the whole ordeal into words incredibly. I feel like I was there, but thankfully wasn't. Good luck with the insurance money and hop right back on that horse (snake).

Mike, you're one seriously lucky son of a gun! I'm glad you were wearing the 5 points or you very probably would have been much more seriously injured.

There is an awful lot to be said for real body-on-frame construction and for the location of the fuel tank. If the tank was hanging down beneath the back, it could have ruptured and burst into flames.

I hope you get some good leads on the pickup driver and are able to prosecute him.

Glad to hear you are alright for the most part. It could have been a lot worse. In the 2 years I have owned my Viper, I have had about 4 run-ins with people pretending like they were going to side swipe my Viper and I didn't even do anything to those people before hand. I never cut them off or did anything that would be remotely misconstrued as bad driving. The last time was last Saturday night. I am just glad they have never gone through with it like that guy did to you. I would think with all the events going on nationally lately that people would be a little kinder and gentler to each other these last few days, I guess not.
I did have one run in with a guy that could have turned out like your story though while I was driving my Explorer a few months ago. The lane I was in was an exit only lane so I had to get over. I had plenty of room, but after I merged into the other lane the cars in front of me stopped short so I had to hit my brakes hard too. The guy behind me could not stop in time so he went into the next lane over. Then he proceeded to fly by me and after he got halfway past me, he completely cut me off. If I was not paying attention, he surely would have hit me and God knows what would have happened. I did not even check to see if there was a car in the lane next to me, I just instinctively swerved over into the next lane. Thank God there was no one beside me in that lane. The guy then flew over 2 lanes and sped off. Never got his plate number.

Mike,

Wow - what a story! I'm glad to hear you are okay as that is most important.

I have totaled a car with a large stereo system and I would recommend removing it from the car at the salvage yard as the insurance company will give you little to nothing for it.

Good luck and keep us up-dated.

Mike......I just finished reading your nice letter in ViperMag that tells the story of taking the Mexico exchange students on a tour of your car......What a graphic, vivid awareness you have of the accident! Unusual. Were you told, or do you recall it? Amazing!

Sorry for your loss, and grateful for your presence, and your presence of mind. I will probably NEVER AGAIN sit on or store my Team-Techs as I often do on short trips, favoring the OEM belts. I knew better, and now I KNOW BETTER. Thank You.

If PartsRack can help you determine a salvage value for the vehicle, or the parts, please ask. Many things have a residual value that you may not have considered.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the well wishes, support and friendliness - I really appreciate the outpouring of support, especially during a time when we have so many other things to be sad about.

JonB, to answer your questions - I am a very VERY analytical person (some would say anally so
smile.gif
), and I have a good memory. I wasn't nervous when it happened, and I just did what I could to maximize my chances of surviving the accident, like bracing myself using my arms pressed against my body when I saw the various impacts coming). It was like everything happened in slow motion. I remember when I first fishtailed past the point of no recovery, and thinking "well if I just tap the wall, I will be Ok". I vividly remember every jolt, bang, and crash that happened. I spent a while after the accident looking at the impacts on the car, the skidmarks, the impacts on the walls and where the parts were strewn, and I corroborated those impacts with the various jolts and crashes I felt. The major impact was with the light pole - and from looking at the car in the junkyard, it was a hell of a hit. Those 5-points are great and combined with the airbags, definitely saved my life.

Thanks for the offer to talk about salvage parts Jon - I will see how things go with the insurance in the next few days. Thanks also for reminding me of the story about the exchange students. It's things like that which will cause me to miss the car so much. As I have been telling friends about this accident, they all have their own opinions on "what I shoudl get next". Some say 911 Turbo, or Esprit, or NSX, or Z06, or Ferrari, or whatever. But I think about every other car that is currently made, and I realize that there is no other car I would want besides another Viper (Ok, with ABS this time)
smile.gif
. Ron's Yellow/black GTS was beautiful at E-town, and I'd love to have one. I think I will get one this coming spring.

As for my drag-racing past - you better believe that any new Viper I get will be at the track, and this time I will leave it bone stock and click off a few 11-second runs just so I can say I did it with a "bone stock car"
biggrin.gif

I'll post pics soon folks... thanks for your support and friendship over the years and during this latest ordeal.

Mike,

Ugh! What terrible news. That made me sick just reading about it. As others have said, thank God you are OK.

Hang in there....Oh, and don't get your hopes up on running 11's with a stock creampuff.... J/K
