Bill; I am awaiting my second Viper. My current 98'RT-10 has been stored very simply until last night. Just changt he oil with Mobil one at your dealer (filter too), and buy a "Battery Tender" for $60. Stick the alligator clips on the positive/negative battery things under the hood, and the tender does the rest keeping your battery at optimum charge with no overload. The Tender is the single best thing I have bought for my Viper; I could leave it unattended for months, maybe years and it would start right away.

Last night i just recieved my "Car Capsule" It is a floormat with a self inflating bubble the you zip in to place around your car. You plug it in and in five minuets your Viper is completely protected from mice, dust, kids, door dongs, etc. I feel I will only really use it over the three coldest Iowa months when their is no sane reason to drive a Viper;Dec,Jan,Feb.

Call 1-800PDK-2822 for info. Look under "CARCAPSULE.com for the sight. I believe I bought the 16' model, and it took about twenty minutes to stretch it out in a cool garage. I practiced driving onto the pad straight twice and I was ligned up. I zipped up, attatched my battery tender,plugged in the sewn in fan and it just erected like a mini circus tent. I am thrilled. In nice weather I will return to my regular Viper car cover for really quick removal.

As a new owner, you need to get a hold of Sal at ZAINO. He makes the best car polish on the planet, I promise...It whooped the pants off of some $300/ounce Zymol I had to apply litteraly by hand. Sal told me to wash my Viper with liquid Dawn detergent to strip crap polishes off and then apply his. WOW. what a differdence. Sal advertises on our site under the new products section. Bored yet? I have so much more to tell. My advice is don't start your Viper, it only creates moisture. Crank it over run it for thirty seconds,get hot and bothered and shut it off before it gets warm. Mice love warm, and they will love your valve cover ares and plug wires most. Don't lure critters to a warm bed. Get a car capsule and lock em' out!

Please call me anytime, I have lots of info and have been to the factory for pick-up and tour.

Sincerely;

Jim Wallace

Agree with Jim... Don't start it unless you plan on running it long enough to get to operating temp. You'll just fill the exhaust and crankcase with moisture. The majority of engine wear is on startup, so in my mind you're doing more harm then good periodically starting it. Once a month, sure, why not... once every couple of days, no way.

In addition to the battery tender, you should also inflate the tires to max sidewall pressure and drive up onto carpet squares to minimize flatspotting. Fill the fuel tank and place a plastic sheet under the car to minimize moisture coming up from the floor and then condensing on the frame.

I may get flamed for this, but I haven't had seen flatspots from parking since radial tires were introduced. (no, I'm not that old, my cars are) I leave cars parked for months, and never get flat spots. IMHO, no carpet scraps are needed. Parquet floors are just fine.

OTOH, I had a '48 Chrysler New Yorker once. The bias ply tires on that behemoth would flat spot overnight. In the winter it would take 30 minutes for the tires to warm up enough to smooth out.

I agree with the other posts about starting- don't tease your snake. Battery Tender is a great idea- any float or 3-stage charger will do. Also, make certain your coolant is fresh.

Other hints......

Tires to max sidewall + 10 lbs. Check your sidewall. DONT DRIVE far at all at this pressure, just store, Park on carpet squares...1-2 layers of cheap-o carpet remnants.

Mouse protection? Mice eat wires and insulation. I put a box of D-con atop each tire. And one box on underhood frame rail.

And yes, I have forgotten them and dumped em!

Clean, fresh oil. Lightest weight, even 0-30 Mobil One. Then, you have MAX flow for pumping on your regular startups. DO RUN to operating temp before shutoff ! Especially important for gasket life with Gen-I engines like yours !
