What is Intended Use for Stock \"Fog\" Lights?

On my 2000 GTS, the "fog" lights supply a horizontal band of light that is precisely "spliced" onto the top of the low beam pattern.

They effectively provide a "higher" low beam. While fairly weak, they do illuminate more of the road.

These are not fog lamps which are supposed to shoot a flat wide beam "under" the lows.

They are not driving lights because they do not shoot out beyond the lows or highs.

So what are they?

Thanks guys!

I knew I "just wasn't getting it!"

I've found they are pretty good looking for owls high up in trees when driving thru the country....

I think the car looks more snake-like with lows on and the fogs off, so I never turn them on...

Noticed that my '02's fog/driving lights are far less effective vengeance than the ones on my '00 RT/10.

Seriously though, I'm wondering if there's just an adjustment necessary on my part or if there was a change made somewhere between model years '00 - '02 ?

I don't use 'em. Just another excuse for the MAN to pull me over when I forget to turn 'em off approaching traffic.

Their real purpose is deer spotters as they light up the little flashlights in deer skulls further off the road than the headlights.
