Hi,

Well....the title says it all. Try not to bash any particular vendor.

I just ordered items for my first modifications for my 1997 GTS so I have Viper projects for the upcoming hibernation. I'm upgrading the exhaust and air intake. Like many, I have a limited budget for mods so I bought based on VCA member vendor feedback and threads.

Some stuff we can all agree is good....some stuff we have bought and have a hard time admitting to ourselves that perhaps we should have thought it out better!!

So......IYHO - What's hype what's not?

Have fun with this and keep it light....come on and share your stories....we've all spent money on questionable impulse buys!!

I'll start.....For me....as I haven't modded the Viper yet so no story there but....I just bought a 1973 Challenger last month to restore........two weeks later......FOR SALE: a 1973 Challenger!!! %%$#@! What the hell was I thinking!! I don't know how to restore a freaking car!

You?

My 2006 Z06. I spent a ton of money to get one of the first Z06's and the thing was junk. Fly off roof panel, dropped intake valve, leaking rear axel...all in 6 months. It Sucked! The only thing that made it worse was the way the dealer treated me. They sucked more!!

Sold it and moved on to the Viper. Miles of smiles ever since.

I was excited to purchase new emblems for the car that I got from R & D distributing. (i got the chrome rt/10 emblems)

And well... a month later, the rear of my viper now says

"D DGE VI E T/10"

they are falling off one by one! :( very embarassing

Kmrumedy: That was a funny story...LOL--liked the part where you say "I don't know how to restore a freaking car"!!! Hmmm...have to say the mods we got all have been good....headers a GenIII CAN do without...but we did gain cooler exhaust and better pull.
All in all--I'd say the mods we got justified themselves. Hope there are no real horror stories!!! ~juli

I am going to hold my tongue and not mention which exhaust system I bought but let me tell you, I was not happy at all! Very high side sill temps and because of that I may need to have them repainted because they discolored somewhat. Car ran sluggish, so much so I checked all of the plug wires and made sure they were on the plug properly. I then changed the plugs but to no avail. Car still did not run right. After all that, I had another cat back system installed, Snake Oyl's, and the car has never ran better! Really low side sill temps and the car runs like it should.

WHy don't you say what system you got? Otherwise it doesn't help perspective buyers to say....yeah I don't like the one I have, but I am not going to tell you what it is.

I got a set of chrome emblems from R&D and loved them - spendy but good. Just make sure you remove wax on car before applying - no problems here.

Another impulse buy was the louvered side sill vents from Partsrack. Crazy expensive for little pieces of metal, but looks very cool on a silver car. No painting necessary. IMHO any little cooling mod you make is worth while.......maybe I'm just taking every possible step to avoid my side sills turning yellow!

Instead of buying a whole new short shifter, I went with the first strike knob and love it. Did the job for me anyhow.

Smart move selling that Challenger IMO.

69 Charger took 7 years and a boat load of money to complete. :omg:

Now for the Viper...those gauge trim rings were a waste. They will appear in the classifieds as soon as I get the Viper out of storage.

Eibach springs.
They're really good for looks, they're cheap, but boy the'yre very stiff!!!
The ride quality is awful especially on the paved street of Paris, very bouncy.
I'm thinking of switching to two way-adjustable Coil overs like KWs.

Auto Zone wing. It flew off at 35 miles per hour. You should have seen the swarm to the shoulder to retrieve it by some ricers. They thought it was real.

I'll never buy aerodynamic mods from Auto Zone again.

Never.

Re: What mod did you LUST after...and when you finally got it....well...it just SUCKE

:D The Vipair deflector...I picked it up off of ebay for $49. I expected 50+HP based on feedback on the forums. Boy, was I left with egg on my face.

Seriously, I purchased a used exhaust consisting of Borla Stepped Headers, B&B cats and catback for my GenII. I expected a nice deep rumble with no drone...well, power gains were great but DRONE WAS horrible. It sounded like a wet fart being amplified through a megaphone. The drone was so loud and deep that I swear I had found the "Brown Note" that makes people lose their ***** control (South Park). It was just awful but the car dyno'd really well. Headers kept leaking at the collectors and they were junk. No wonder Borla stopped making them for the GenII. I'm confident that the Borla headers caused the terrible drone in the car as the B&B system was built well. I ditched the exhaust after my neighbors complained about the ricer sound and my migrains wouldn't go away. I now have a full belanger system and couldn't be happier! :2tu:

Shhhhhhhh! Bullet went through my mind during a drive-by at McD's. I'm in surgery for a few more hours. Chances of survival are good though. I can still post. Actually, I think that wasn't a bullet at all. Just a chocolate shake hitting pay dirt.

Roe blower system. Expected to run easy 10's at around 133 mph. Best so far is 11.04 @ 130. Also only made 640 rwhp. What a POS system. :D

Re: What mod did you LUST after...and when you finally got it....well...it just SUCKE

Lusted after some new wheels for some time. Got the SP600. I do not like them. Since the quality was very poor out of the box, my opinion of how they looked on the car soured even more. Will spend this winter working on them to clean them up. Then I may sell them and buy the SSR/tires from Jon.

Only other mod that I would change is the tint on the back window. Went for limo dark and I think I should have gone a couple of shades lighter. Looks good but rear visability at times, especially at night is not comforting.

VEC2, muffler delete, rotors and PBJ airbox are thumbs up.

Re: What mod did you LUST after...and when you finally got it....well...it just SUCKE

Water/**** kit on my previous car (94 S/C'd Bumble Bee)....never really could get it to work properly.....what a PITA.....Belanger Headers (great choice, great fit, absolutely no issues), Kinesis Wheels (VERY EXPENSIVE)...had other choices that would have been just fine and would have saved a bunch of money......door handle surrounds on the Gen 1 were a mistake as you ruined the 2 sided tape to get them off to get to the screws for the door panel removal.....another PITA.

So far with the 2005 I have been pleased.....again with Belanger Headers, high flow cats (with the Belanger exhaust) are a great sound......Paxton S/C was a difficult install, but it is worth it.......very well thought out engineering. The louver covers on the SRT I think are WAY too expensive for just a piece of metal, so I made my own out of aluminum and polished them up to have the same luster as the side emblems of the Commemorative Edition Vert.........1st side was a pain, but I got the hang of it and the other side was very reasonable ($15 for the aluminum, and 2 1/2 hours of my time...well worth it.....Also, the diffuser fins are painted black out of the factory.....and again I think the Stainless covers that sell for $350+ are a rip off......so I dropped the panel that they are riveted too, drilled out the rivets, took off the diffuser fins, and painted them the same white as the car......on the outside of the lateral fin on each side I had my son (web page designer) make a Fangs Logo in the exact blue stripe color,(about 1" in diameter), and placed them on the fin.....then put the fins back on with bolts and nuts (as they should have been from the factory, instead of rivets) and the diffuser fins looks awesome!!!!! Really shows up and sets off the rear of the car......and again well worth the effort of 1 1/2 hours, a $1.99 can of white primer, and a $2.99 can of spray paint (factory body color) instead of the stainless covers rip off!!

I added Roe High flow cats to a corsa cat back on my GTS.

The dreaded drone came back big time and not really much cooler on the sills. Plus the exhaust leaks almost killed me. They need to be welded on, not tightend with clamps.

The 1st mod to my viper was a new motor.

But the new motor rocks. Almost 565rwhp N/A and a 708-like cam

Worthless mods so far, O2 sims that don't work.

3.55 gears, most useless mod I ever spent money on. Even the non-working shift eliminator for $7 was better.... Within a month I switched the 3.06's back.

Ah yes!! Thank you for reminding me. I put 3.45 gears in my '97 GTS. Without a doubt, the biggest waste of money/worst mod I've ever done. I'm serious this time.
