I just bought a 2000 GTS, so I don't have a surplus of cash burning a hole in my pocket.
But, I was wondering what some of you thought would be the way to go 1st.
I'm planning on putting Balanger headers and a corsa exhaust on my car.
Should I do the headers first and then do the Corsa after or should I do the Corsa first.
When having to deal with a exchange rate of $1.55 it makes some of these seemingly low price mods a little on the expensive side hear in Canada.
Just want some advice from some of you who have done these mods.
Also, is this the best exhaust combination for HP gains on the street or is there something else I should be looking for.
Keep in mind I live the city so straight pipes or straight pipe sound is out of the question.
Thank for your opinions,
TJ

Doing a catback or headers without doing the other is kind of like having only one ****** implant installed, it just ain't complete!

I'd wait until I could do both and do the job once. Your computer requires learn time for these mods in order to achieve the full gain. Your engine is just a fancy air pump. Your exhaust will only flow as good as the largest orfice. A catback may enhance the sound of your engine, but the performance gain will not be noticable. 10-12 hp gain on top of 450 is not noticable. Flame suit donned!

Gears, thats another one. NO GAIN IN POWER. Just a mind trick. Seat of the pants, etc.

As for best gain for the dollar, NOS is the undisputed champion. Nitrous is not for everyone, and I'm not suggesting it to you, just answering your question.

You have to ask yourself one simple question; after I have spent this money have I gotten the most for my investment?

Good luck with your search.

Ronviper,
Thank you,
I've talked to Mike and that's likely where I'll source most of my mods.

Tom,
I've never been a big Nitrous fan. IMO, it's like a time bomb, just shortens the life of the engine.
And I agree with the one boob theory, but if you can only spend so much I guess 1 big boob is better than no big boobs

.
Although, with exhaust it wouldn't be as obvious as half a boob job.

Martkat,
I think that's the route I'll go thanks.

425 RWHP is pretty standard for a Gen II with tubes filters and stock exaust. My 97 dynoed at 424. The snake oil exaust probably does nothing as it is a stock diameter I believe. In fact Snake Oil beieves that going to a 3" cat back without headers actually decreases hp.

If you cannot do both, get the Corsa 3" with 3" high flow cats. This will give you great sound and probably 15 hp mainly due to the cats. More like only getting C cup implants where the Headers/cats/catback is like DDs.

Tom, while your analogy accurately supports your point, its influence is minimal. The female body is extraordinary even in OEM form, furthermore in the event of an incomplete "aftermarket installation" allows many options for positioning of one’s breastless hand.

As for "exhaust flow" and "largest orifices"...

...I think I'm getting sidetracked, what was this thread about?

That dyno day at Heffners was actually posted on the board by Ron Hickey so a search under Dyno day, or Heffner or Ron Hickey would bring it back. One of the things that we conclusively proved that day as we had a good variety of cars with various mods all on the same day, same dyno and same driver, Jason Heffner, was that cat back exhaust w/o headers but with somooth tubes as the only other addition would give any where from 7-10 rear wheel horse power., and this was very conclusive on so called creampuff 2000+, I actually think that is about what Tom said at the top. As to whether you can feel it, I doubt it also, but it sure makes a difference in how it sounds! One other thing to remember is if you do the catback first, you will wind up replacing the catback with a bigger diameter when you do go to headers. Most tuners I have spoken with indicate that going to a bigger diameter catback then the rest of the system will DEGRADE performace, so I would do it all at once.

And one small word of caution: The 2000+ model years do NOT respond to headers nearly as well as earlier models. The newer cams are more "tamed" and the resulting power from even the best headers can be as little as a six horsepower increase. That's not to say that most don't gain more, but don't expect the 50 ponies that earlier motors get from headers. It won't happen.

Changing the computers from 2002 to 1998 definety helps the newer cars. If you want to switch to a 1998 cam you can order one from local dealer believe list is $358 canadian. Still switching cams is a ***** (am I aloud to say the b word)

I recommend 98 computers anytime mods are done to the heads give better throttle reponse and eliminates check engine lights.
