a stock USA car FASTER than the 192 that Motor Trend got a '97 GTS to go? I don't think so.

A Quicker car to 60 or 1/4? Maybe some from the early 1960's with the right tires.

Well, being up in the northwoods of Maine like I am today, I remember that a car (1967 Plymouth) called the Silver bullet had a rep as being the fastest car on Woodward Ave, never got beaten by anything the other factories put out there then! Somebody has it restored now, was in Auburn, Indiana a couple of years ago, had 4 exhaust pipes out the rear end. It was a Hemi, but modded by the factory, somewhat heavily I presume. Never saw any times on it, but it was wicked looking.

The new Saleen S7 is suppose to have a top speed well over 200MPH. The only one I've seen was at the Houston Auto Show but supposedly they've started building them.

Tony, I don't think the ZL-1 came out until 1969 and although the ZL-1 weighed less and had great potential to be modified for more power, when compared showroom stock to showroom stock with the L88, they had the same power output.

I still think the early 1960 factory lightened cars like the Thunderbolt, Max Wedge and Hemi cars hold the records in the 1320 by running in the 11 second range.

There is a Car Craft test of a 1969 Firebird with a Ram Air V motor that ran 11.6, but. like the LS-7, the Ram Air V was a crate motor are "ringers". (And none of them can compare to the current Monster Mopar Hemi crate motors you an buy.)

The Yenkos, Saleen, etc. are also ringers if talking about "Factory" direct performance. Then you have to bring in the Venom, TNT, Ling., etc packages of modern day.

I'm thinking the Impala you're referencing may be a '63 that had a 409-based 427 with aluminum front end and bumpers. Z-11 was the designation, I think. And they were built for drag racing and nascar. Or it could be the first Mark IV big block that was bounced out of nascar until it was fitted in a production car in '65.

The ZL-1, as Marv stated, is basically an aluminum version of the L-88 with second gen L-88 heads and a bit more camshaft (L-88 cam wasn't exactly mild, either).

I'd go with the Hurst Hemi Dart/Cuda as the quickest. Though a T-Bolt or SD Tempest would probably be right there, too. These cars weren't street cars, though, and were delivered sans warranty (or paint, in some cases).

Modern cars? Callaway Vettes could be ordered as regular option through Chev. dealers (B2K?). I think he made at least a couple or so twin-turbo ZR-1 cars near the end of the run (at least one Speedster and coupe) that are probably fairly quick. The "sledgehammer" he built went 254 mph or some crazy number. I think Lingenfelter did the driving, too. But this car was a one-off and probably not too emissions friendly, either.

Saleen S7 is probably the quickest current car. They're taking orders all day long at Saleen dealers. $375k a pop, I think. The Mosler's fast, too, and his best looking car to date, IMO - if he actually builds it. If so, it'd be a cool car to have.

Oh, and I wouldn't mind having a memory like Gene's or a wagon like Mark's.

Yep. Where's the motor pic?

BTW - April Hemmings has a '64 440 wagon with supposedly orig. 426 street wedge and 4spd. If true, must be one of few.

Pretty sure there were at least a couple of twin Paxton supercharged 427 Cobras built. Cosby had one and so did Carroll (still does?). Don't know the perf. numbers but was most likely the quickest of the Cobras.

Agree, maybe this topic should be moved out of the tubes and filters section.

Very cool, cleanly done, and it should get the groceries home before the frozen stuff melts. Nice car, nice pics - thanks for posting 'em.

Mark,
Sorry I didn't make it to Massachusetts, back home in W. Michigan now. Did have some chowdah and some good old RI clamcakes! They were excellent. Drove right through Walpole, on the way up and back from Maine, just did not have time to stop by and say hi! Did get a ride in a ZO6 from and old friend, I'll be posting that story later. Only saw one Viper the whole time, it was on RT 93 heading North on the north side of Boston last Saturday. Blue GTS with white stripes.
