What\'s the best short shifter for a GenII??????

There has been a post about some shorter shafts and different knobs but i want to know what the consensus is for the best short shifter for our cars. I'm in the market for one and have no idea what the majority go with these days.

Post up what you have and why you think it's the best. Ease of installation should play a factor as well since i will be doing this myself.

Thanks

you are never going to get a "consensus" on a subject like this. I just ordered the Hurst for my '94 after reading what seemed like 100 old posts. one thing is for certain, the stock shifter is not great...

as far as installation is concerned, I think they are all the same.

I just installed my hurst shifter today and did a little custom work to my first strike shifter from mgw, so it would be a little lower, photos of my install are in my gallery

Re: What\'s the best short shifter for a GenII??????

FWIW worth...I simply got rid of the factory isolator, installed one of the short throw adapters from Rich Detert, and switched to the earlier know as I hated the 2000 one. Huge difference for little bucks.

(Off topic but.. I installed a MGW handle in my Cobra to bring the reach closer. Getting rid of the factory insulators makes the biggest difference)

I really think the whole shifter thing is overrated. I mean, a shorter throw is great, but often the shift gets notchier, higher effort..seems like a wash. For those that had seen the last Ronnie Sox row through a 4 speed with one of those crappy Hurst or Overland shifters in the old Mopars would realize that it ain't the shifter...it's the technique.

Few people have more than one, so you'll never get a good answer to this one. It's all hearsay or a sample size of one. Hard to compare someone's "I love mine" to someone else's "mine's great".

I have the Hurst and "like it a lot".

Also drilled and tapped a Hurst T-shifter handle for it for a one-off :)

I like the Hurst; however, it was a bit tricky to install due to some dimensions requiring you to turn it the exact right way and angle to clear the transmission tunnel surround and bottom of ashtray cavity. I haven't read about similar installation issues with the B&M.

I am happy with my B&M topped off with a MGW knob. Install was easy except for that one bolt.... I can not believe there is any difference from a GEN I to GEN II

I had the Hurst on my first Viper and now have the B&M. Both are a significant improvement over stock and I would use either again. B&M's are inexpensive on eBay.

"what's the best sounding exhaust"

.....everyone likes what they have and they think IT'S the best.
Best to get to a VCA club event and try a few on for size yourself or you could do like some have......buy them all and see for yourself. That's what I did on my Z-06 before I found what I liked

this is why I went with the Hurst. anytime I can't make my mind up about something like this I ask Chuck Tator. I figure he's been around more VIPERs than most of us. yes, he sells the Hurst, but he's seems pretty convinced that the Hurst has the best feel, so that's what I went with.

Re: What\'s the best short shifter for a GenII??????

I haven't seen anyone mention the SVS here yet. When I was deciding on which one to buy back in July I must have spent several hours pouring over old threads on the subject. The people who had the SVS seemed to have the most positive feedback and that's why I ordered one.

It finally arrived Friday and I might get around to installing it sometime this weekend, although I have a lot of other things to do around the house. Having two days in a row off work is rare for me so I have a lot of "honey do's" to catch up on before tinkering with my garage toy. Yes, just two days off - I have to work Saturday.

I have the same setup as you, but can't tell by the photos of what exactly you did to modify it. Can you give an explanation via pm if you don't mind?

Re: What\'s the best short shifter for a GenII??????

A little research shows the B&M shifter reduces the throw by 30%, the hurst shifter reduces throw by 40% :)

With the Hurst shifter what knob fits on it? I see the stock knob will not fit. I dont like the round ball hurst one either.

what are the options?

thanks

I believe that Hurst newer shifter do accept the stock knob. If the one your buying does not, it's an older Hurst shifter.

Re: What\'s the best short shifter for a GenII??????

My SVS shifter is awesome. They offer two lengths also. My shifter when combined with the MGW knob makes it a bit shorter than I like it to be. Maybe if we traded shift knobs it would slove both of our problems lol.

I cut down the stock one and put an MGW knob on it.

have a hurst in my other car and decided to try something different in the Viper, works great. Think you can buy them already cut/threaded on Ebay or from a vendor in different lengths.

I just installed the Hurst shifter and Hurst ball, much easier to install than everyone made it sound like. I'll post up a good info thread after I take it for a spirited ride, but here's some pics:

I have a B&M and LOVE it, however I have never tried any other shifter besides stock and my B&M, but I do hear great things about Hurst.
