What's up with MGW?

Ordered the gripper shifter back on June 9. I got an invoice from them right away. But I've never received any shipping confirmation or tracking number. I tried to e-mail them on their contacts to see if this thing is back ordered or whatever, but I just get a delivery fail notification. It's like their e-mail doesn't even exist?

Yes that's the one I ordered. If I hadn't already paid for it I would be glad to just pick up a used one. I'm buying it for functionality more than anything. I'm going to be turfing that ugly giant ball shift knob anyway when I finally get the full shifter.

Out of curiosity, what do you want for yours? If it turns out this thing is backordered for a long time then I would like to just grab yours. I have a road trip coming up July 19, and would like to have a shifter I can rest my hand on properly.

Not sure what you mean by rest, but you should only have your hand on the nob when you shift. Not good for the transmission to rest your hand on it.

In all my years as a mechanic I have never seen an issue caused by leaving your hand on the shift knob, nor could I even conjure up a reason for it to happen with my mechanical knowledge. To each his own though, I won't argue with you about it, but I will continue to leave my hand on the knob(track driving aside)

Its just not socially acceptable to rest your hand on your knob while driving. Depending on who your passengers are, anyway. You should always have both hands on the steering wheel in order to be prepared for the unexpected. Unless you practice poor driving habits.

I recall (reading in that thread) that resting your hand on the shifter in neutral while stopped at an intersection still wasn't a good idea.

The reason for not leaving your hand on the shifter is the chance that you would preload the synchronize rings and can cause premature failure. Just that simple. I once heard of a racecar driver that would preload a emco sequential trans and after a race all the blocker rings would be blue from from heat. So whatever is comfortable for you but it would be a good idea to brake the habit.

One of those is a poor driving habit, the other is a decision to ignore a bureaucratically developed rule for the lowest common denominator driver. Yes, I lapse into poor habits also; but, I try to correct myself. Not being prepared results in thousands of vehicle accidents a day, IMHO.

If you're putting pressure on the knob one way or the other then that would be rather silly. It would also be a good way to pull the car out of gear if you happen to let off the gas for something.

Fortunately a good driver can still be prepared while only having one hand on the wheel. As well as having just as much steering wheel rotation available as with 2 hands. Regardless, I'm not here to discuss driving technique. I haven't managed to go 17 years of avoiding the average licensed idiot by exercising poor driving habits and not paying attention.



The knob feels great!! It showed up today along with my package from VPA containing the blue stitched shifter and e-brake boots. Now all I have left to do for this summer is install the back up camera, amplifier, and Subwoofer box which is scheduled to show up in the mail tomorrow.
