Wheel hop after new wheels and tires.... Help!!!

Okay I just put new gen 3 wheels the 18/19 combo with new super sports on my gen 2. I also put new stoptech slotted rotors and new pads on at the same time. I had the tires road forced balanced as everyone suggested and a alignment done just to be safe. I got on it a bit and was used to the tires just spinning with the old original tires. This time I got some pretty drastic wheel hop. I let out of it pretty quick and there was no damage done that I could fine and the car dives just fine but I don't want to do that ever again! Why would new wheels and tires cause this? Do I need to adjust something? My tire pressure is at 40 psi all the way around. Is that to little or to much? What am I missing?

Tire pressure is way too high. You should probably be somewhere in the low 30's. Mine will occasionally wheel hop, especially if tires are cold.

No one seemed to know what pressure to run at the shop. I appreciate it the info. I will drop it tonight. I enjoy spinning the tires a little to much and get a kick out of it when I get a chance to slide it around a corner, but that wheel hop scared the crap out of me! I have no desire to break anything

Your old tires were not run flats - correct? Your new tire is a run flat - correct? On this forum, many of us refer to them as "run craps". Do a little research on this site and you will find out why. When I had my Gen III, I switched to PS2s. It made a world of difference on a number of levels.

BTW, I am not disagreeing with Viper John. Just adding a comment.

Aren't all G1-4 pressures supposed to be 29 psi?

Also, these are new to you. Sure it was wheel hop?

40 is way too much tire pressure.....

Aside from that, My car will wheel hop if the tires get loose in a straight line regardless of what tires I have on the car or what pressure they are at.
Worse when cold out.

But drifting is no problem. At slow or moderate speed, I can induce oversteer, go throttle on and spin up the tires. No hopping.
It seems, as long as you are driving a little sideways, the car is smooth.

So, stay within the grip/traction limit when going straight by rolling on the throttle.
Go balls to the wall around the corners. -just don't hit anything.

Watch out for cops.

factory spec tire pressure with 18 or 17 wheels 29psi. i found the 40psi on 19/20 combo is the best, since the tire is not as tall

Agree 40 psi cold tire pressure for street us ise way too high, maybe even dangerous for street use depending on alignment, ambient temperature, and road conditions. Had a friend (long time multi-Vipers owner) RETURN a Gen III Viper to the dealer after driving only part of the way home due to "uncontrollable handling" with similarly high cold tire pressures. Conceivably, one could even approach or exceed maximum side wall pressures under certain circumstances.

Just for the record:

1. The recommended tire pressures are usually listed on the driver's door pillar...in times past, some manufacturers listed them on the glove box door and/or in the owner's manual

2. The 92 through 95 Vipers had a recommended cold tire pressure of 35 psi on the OEM Michelin Pilot XGT's.

3. From 1996 through 2014, the recommended cold tire pressure was/is 29 psi.

Thanks for the pix of the blown vette.....not to hijack the thread (but I will since you seem to have the answer you sought) but that looks like a TON of carb for a small block. Did you through something bigger underneath that intake? ;-)

the vette is a 79 with a 350 and a 671 blower in it pushing about 625hp. the Porsche is a 2011 carrera s non turbo. the Camaro is narrowed and tubbed with a 582 merlin 3 pushing about 900hp but is pretty much a trailer queen.

the vette is a 79 with a 350 and a 671 blower in it pushing about 625hp. the Porsche is a 2011 carrera s non turbo. the Camaro is narrowed and tubbed with a 582 merlin 3 pushing about 900hp but is pretty much a trailer queen.

So we are talking about 2.500 HP in total in your garage! :D
