I have the car for 1.5 year now and I'm wondering if I should replace K&N filters for new ones. How long do they last?

If your question is how often to replace the filter itself, the answer is never. The whole idea behind oiled filters is its the oil doing the filtering. The cotton gauze is merely there to hold the oil and the metal screen is merely there to hold the cotton and keep out big stuff like birds and bugs. So, unless the screeen or cotton is physically damaged, there is no need to ever replace the filter.

If your question is how often to service the filter (thorough cleaning and re-oiling), I usually do it with every oil change.

are you serious? I mean actually serious. Did you not look at the [******] box the things came in?

With that said and seeing your obvious grasp of automotive upkeep, you should buy NEW ONES everytime you change your blinker fluid.

Craig, are you off from school? I'm asking Viper OWNERS and not school kids for advice. You can keep your stupid comments for the ViperTrashAleey.com.

Jrkermode, my question is for both. When I had a Vette the filter would pick up some nasty stuff plus part of it was getting dry. For the price I would rather replace it than service it.

ElDiablo,

I have much experience with Air filters in general and he is how I do it. When filter is obviously getting dirty and filled with debris just take it out and toss it.

Never wash K&N's or any other filters, while you can clean them and they will be resuable the flow numbers on cleaned filters are lower than OEM filters.

A few years ago Turbo magazine ran a test on K&N filters flow number and they really were much higher than stock. So then they took the K&N test and cleaned it and then reflowed it, and the flow numbers droped over 1/3 of new numbers.

So unless you are content with going back to stock flow numbers get new ones.

Last time I checked ******,they make K&N's for all types of vehicles. Having personal experience with K&N's I find it funny that someone as great as you would even have to ask such a simple, simple question. Perhaps you need to go back to school.

You're gonna need some new insults your schoolkid thing is way past it's overdue date. LAAAAMEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOOO

Unless they are damaged, just clean them in your laundry tub and re-oil them. The reason that they don't flow as well after cleaning is usually the dorks that do it don't let them completly dry and then drench them with oil. As far as I know once their good and dry you can't hurt them with too much oil. If they get saturated the air flow will pull the excess out after a few runs. Short version, air flows like crap with a water soaked filter, air flows less with an oil/water soaked filter. Air flows like great when water is out and saturated oil is pulled through. IMO

carguy07,
i agree with you completely.

JonB had good advice "get a second set" i got the Roe filters as my 2nd set
and that way you can wash and dry properly and just rotate them.

about to swap them out now that i am at 7,000 miles

I do remember that on the K&N box they did show that their used filters flow less than a new paper element filter.

Uh, a "Dirty K&N" flows less than a new paper one. But Clean it and your good to go.

You must be registered for see images

"A K&N Filtercharger can be washed up to 25 times before it is considered no longer serviceable. Even though the filter may not show outward signs of deterioration, it should be replaced after 25 washings. Excessive washings will deplete the tiny cotton hairs that crisscross the openings. The resulting damage will allow tiny dust particles to pass through."

"When servicing a K&N filter, take care not to over-oil the element. Besides impeding air flow, excess oil can migrate into the intake system where it can coat electronic sensors, which may hinder their operation. Never saturate the filter. If oil drips from the filter, wash it and start over. Use only K&N oil."

That's it. I guess they don't show what a cleaned filter flows. K&N recommends cleaning every 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions!
