Where did you place your radar detector?

I was always skeptical of radar detectors however, everyone keep telling me that its worth the money. Considering it is, which one do you use and most importantly where do you place it in the SRT? I don't want to place it on the dashboard or have wires run in the cockpit :drive:.

I took a couple shots for you I hope they are not too freaking big. I used the same mount as Hiss but with the 9500i. I was back and forth between the valentine and the 9500i. I have been very happy with it and not a ticket since owning it! The gps feature is awesome and funtional!

countryjoycrafts here 2 with mirror wire.....i also have the 9500i but with the blue display:sombrero:

The countryjoycrats gadget is well made but it is also bendable so you can achieve the desired angle you want whether it is pointing straight down the highway or angled to the driver

I have mine mounted ABOVE the mirror, keeping my view of the road/idiots as unobstructed as possible. It also gives the detector a better vantage point for picking up signals.
Still well within easy reach for power/muting/settings.
Power is routed back through the OEM braided line, through the headliner, down the A-pillar, and then to the fuse box.

Rubber Bushing (off of a $0.59 pipe clip):

(acts as a vibration absorber while reducing the diameter of the mount so it fits the receiver section of the adjustable cylinder on the mirror)

Plate has been rotated 90º since this picture. It now supports the majority of the radar detector, and still allows full adjustment of the mirror.

So to power off the mirror wires, it is a cut and splice job, right?
Yes. Pretty simple, if you know the pin-outs on the mirror (I'm sure someone here has them memorized...heh heh).

Parts (insert pins) can be found at Radio Shack for a buck or two.

I went thru the trouble to run the telephone cable for my V1 up to the mirror - doable, but I would do the mirror wiring kit in the future. The mirror light/power source to the radar detector will automatically go off after a short time or until you open the door. Call me cheap, but the standard suction cup mount kit with the V1 tucks it up tight on the left side of the mirror without obstructing the view at all.

I mounted the V1 above and to the right of the mirro, not only it is out of the way but also more difficult for the law to see. I then wired the V1 to the remote display mounted neatly with velcro tape to the left side of the dash, just above the speaker grill. This way the V1 remains black and the remote display stays in my field of vision but pointing downward and noone can really see it. The A pillar also blocks it and no one standing outside of the driver's door can see it either. Since the fuse box is right under the remote unit on the left side it is very simple to wire it to the ignition. Besides the remote display, there's nothing to buy for this install. I'll try to take some pictures when I have a chance.

Top of mirror on the right. (like Kevans above) Tucks in there perfectly with the standard V1 suction cup. Not only does a little more height make it better for doing it's job, there is no vision obstruction. Field of view in a Viper is limited to start with.

Here's my setup with the V1 remote display, the main display remains dark at all times. The remote reamins in my field of view to the right and low and out of the way and not noticeable by the law or anyone else. There's nothing to buy, no mount, no Invisicord and easy to install as all I needed was to run the phone cord (supplied) from the V1 to the remote, then use the supplied hardwire kit to tap into ground and one green wire a foot undernead the remote display under the dash. Whole job took less than 1/2 hour. BTW, the suction cups are working well and they have not come off in over a month.

Driver's view (or what I don't see - something blocking my view)

I placed my V1 above the mirror, It works well in this position. Nothing obstructs the view of the radar or me. And all I used was the invisicord. The V1 has saved me quite a few times. Excellent radar!

A little off-topic, but I'm not completely sold on my new V-1 because the cops around here will 'pulse' their radar. I'll be driving along and then suddenly the detector goes crazy and then the cop passes me the opposite direction. Luckily I was not speeding. This has happened a few times now.

I'm no radar expert but i'm sure that would happen with ANY radar detector, has nothing to do with the V1.

These units cannot tell the future, well that i'm aware of.

Call me stupid, but here's what I did with my '97 GTS and it worked great. First, I got rid of the rear-view mirror - it obstructed too much of my front view, and I'm more interested in where I'm going than where I've been... Then, I installed the V1 at a point high enough on the windshield to be able to detect front/rear signals, and ran the black phone cord down to the fuse block for power - and mounted the remote display on the steering column. At one point I posted pictures, etc., of this, but that was way back in '97 and after the forum switched styles it seemed to disappear.

I won't call you stupid, but removing the center rear view mirror is dangerous and IIRC, illegal in some places.
Check with your local LEO.

Yeah, I thought about that - but there is a twist to the law that allows for it as long as you have external mirrors on both sides that allow for adequate visibility. I think that law was intended for trucks where you can't see out the rear window at all - but I'm going with it. All things considered, the rearview mirror on my Viper wasn't all that effective anyhow, and it's one of those things where I doubt I'll get a fix-it ticket since it isn't anywhere near obvious. I do keep it in the car, just in case, though... Those darn things are very prone to falling off the windshield at the worst possible time, so I got proactive :) It was actually very surprising - I just tugged on it a little bit and it came off the glass without leaving a bit of adhesive behind.

HEHEEH Yea I have thought about getting rid of it or moving it to the right some. Funny though!:lmao:

'Instant on' - nothing much you can do in this scenario. As it has been mentioned here before, the radar detector [be it V1 or any other] is not a complete cloaking device. One would still need to be a very attentive driver.

The V1 is awesome - you will surely be sold on it in no time :)

Believe it or not, on the older Gen 2 cars like mine, the rearview mirrors really did have a knack for popping off the windshield. I read a few threads where people were debating which adhesive to use to reattach it, so I got to thinking - "if I'm driving the heck out of this car and the mirror pops off the windshield and gets under the pedals, that would really ****...". So, I gave it a little tug to see how well it was attached, and it literally 'popped' right off. After driving around once with it gone, I just couldn't bear to put it back - I'm tall, so it felt like I gained twice the forward visibility that I had before. Especially to the right of the car - so I consider it a safety improvement :)

Exactly. I'm not sure why anyone would want to mount a detector below the mirror. That would irritate the heck out of me.

It tucks in perfectly above and to the right of the mirror with the included suction cup holder. Seems like it was made for a Viper. It's virtually unnoticeable until it indicates.

You can run a pigtail off the RV mirror too. It's actually a better fit in my '08 than it was in my '01.

Well I saw nice set ups by different forum members placing it below the mirror, but to my taste it obstructs too much of front visibility to my likeness. So I mounted using supplied windshield mount above the mirror and to the left (closer to the driver) and it tucks it in there just perfect.

Depending the model of your detector, for the V1, it is better to mount it to the right of the mirror as the rear detector would clear the center **** for better rear "visibility" of radar guns.
