Where does this Interior Trim Fastener go in 2006 coupe?

I took my friend for a ride and I go to clean the car up today and I notice this on the passenger floorboard but I couldnt find where it went.
Anyone know where this goes?

Pretty sure this is the exact same piece but the pins on the end broke off.

Carpet retainer in the footwell area under the dash?

Yes it is in the footwell, unfortunately I see no way to put it back in there. I pushed and pulled and it just doesn't reach either of the 2 holes in that piece of metal.
