Where is this oil coming from

So I was under my car a little bit ago and I was RTV'ing all my oil pan bolts cause I have a small leak and figured that was the problem. I do think that was part of my problem but I noticed some oil build up higher than the oil pan. Gravity tells me it isn't leaking from just there.

1st pic is looking up right next to the oil filter. Those are NOT the oil cooler lines they are the PS lines I'm guessing. I have already had my oil cooler lines replaced and they don't seem to be leaking @ all.

2nd pic is looking up front in front of the crank pulley. The middle of it looks to be dry. But the bottom of the rad. hose has oil on it as you can see.

Any suggestions would be helpful, I have a maxcare warranty on my car but not the greatest of dealerships around. So if/when I take it in I'd like to be able to tell them exactly what's wrong so they don't start doing a bunch of stupid crap.

Was there any oil on the top of the filter housing? Airflow can get oil a lot of places. The best bet is to clean it all off and then look for the source.

Check your timing cover for crack or early gasket failure... and try re-torque of valve cover bolts.

There was oil on the filter. I have swapped filters and resealed twice now to rule that out. This was my first thought a couple weeks ago as I kept researching I went on to the oil pan bolts but this is to high for that I believe. The filter is being leaked onto and not causing he leak. Seems to be concentrated under the PS lines.

Any oil in the valley under the intake ? I have seen a cover leak put oil on top or the engine too. Like Mark said, it can move to weird places.

The year matters. It could be PCV/valve cover/airbox drool on '96-'97 models. Like others have said - it could also be timing gasket or cover leakage as well.

Go down to your local CARQUEST/NAPA/AUTOZONE etc... get yourself an oil leak dye kit... Pour in the little bottle.. put on the fancy yellow glasses...and shine the UV light on the wet areas and follow the trail. Make sure you start off looking for it on the jack stands while idling then move to running it up the road and back for a minute or so until the dye starts to appear. Keep checking until you can find it... Its better than just tearing it down to a bare block and buying a new gasket kit or wasting your time making changes that don't work...

I'll look into this as well. As I said I have warranty but I have no trust in the last dealership I took it too.

Nothing yet, I'm waiting on a part to come in that needs to go back on before I can start the motor back up and try and figure out where it's coming from. If I can't it's going to Macedo's for a new clutch soon and I'll hae him look @ it as well.

We got some dye in it up @ Macedo's. He thinks it's either the timing cover gasket or the front crank seal. I'm gonna get under it prob tommorrow or Sat. with a blacklight if I can find one

Tony is correct. The front cover gasket may have been slipped upon engine assembly. Look on the passenger side, below the throttle body where the water pump meets the front cover and if a pool of oil has formed, it's the timing cover gasket. From the looks of it, it's slinging off of the damper, so it could be something as easy as the front seal. You probably need the damper pinned too!

Based on the info, my money is on the timing chain cover gasket. That gasket has been an engine killer too, especially when it leaks coolant into the crankcase!

On his car I replaced the timing cover gasket......there really wasn't much oil around the cover but under the intake almost halfway back it was filling the valleys up with oil. Weird.

Yep. Happened to my car. I could've sworn it was a valve cover leak. I retorqued the valve cover, cleaned up the lake of oil on top of the engine, and then ordered a new gasket. A few weeks after installing the new gasket, the lake returned. Tony fixed the problem by doing the timing cover gasket R&R.

I'm waiting on a local delaership to call me back when the Viper tech I was reccommended will be available. I have a feeling I won't be getting that call. May have to go to Daytona to get this done.

Update: I ended up having to take the car all the way to Daytona Dodge last week and dropped it off. The tech is gonna replace the PVC valve, hoses, grommet to start with. He believes it's all blow back/by and blowing back up the intake and leaking out of the intake box drains onto the front of the motor. I think he's wrong but we'll see what happens, waiting on parts.

First pic, if those are PS lines then I think you need to replace the PS high pressure line or at least tighten the nut. Use a line wrench. 18mm fits that end of the line, 16mm fits the end going into the pump. Probably need to replace the line. Tator has them.

I think thet are coolant lines. PS is on the other side

YES it just happened to me 1.7 rollers. Blow back/by and blowing back up the intake and leaking out of the intake box drains onto the front of the motor. Unclip the box, pull the filters and the little white sponge. If the filter has a little air resistance from some oil or water, dirt, leaf, ect.. might pull excess oil from the valve covers. In my case no big deal. MY $2... Oil mess mostly on drivers side in this case.

I have the 1.7's as well. Same thing, mostly leaking down the driver's side. How did you stop this?

Got the car back yesterday. Here's all what was replaced:

Cam sensor (was watching it cut in and out on his scanner, he think this was becuase oil from the leak was going directly onto the sensor)- 5245084
Grommet Crank - 5245322
Harness CCV - 4763806-ac
Gasket oil pan - 5037022-aa
Switch oil pressure - 4848295
Oil

Unrelated to the oil leak my Ujoints were destroyed he said, so he replaced all those as well.
