Why are modified corvettes have faster ET\'s than Vipers with less HP

Lingenfelter has a 650 HP Corvette running a 9.50 in the quarter at 145 MPH, while no other Viper tuner is able to beat that time even though the Vipers have more HP. Can someone please explain the secret for the vettes.

thanks

Probably because Viper tuners don't run 14 PSI

EDIT: I think your info is a little skewed; the Lingenfelter 'Vette that ran a 9.5 is an 800 HP car; Motor Trend just tested it against an F/A-18 from the Blue Angels. I think a Viper is probably harder to hook up at the strip (unless you're Mike Brunton

Power to weight ratios. The vette weighs a few hundred pounds less. Also has a better drag coeifiencent(however it is spelled).

650hp Vette running 9s? Only if it's carbon fiber and gutted.

I ran 650rwhp in a solid axle car w/ slicks, and never came near the 9's!? I could clock off 6.68's in the 1/8th though

I would say weight, traction, and yes.. .cupholders!

My take would be top-end versus low-mid-end power. This affects both hook-up and the ability to take advantage of gearing. Anyone know what redline is on the L-Vette.

Vette=Auto
Viper=Manual

That's why

put a manual in the Vette and it'll do the same times as a Viper.

All the fast Vettes/F bodies/etc.... Are automatics.

Any Viper with 600+rwhp can run 9's with slicks, just takes an auto tranny to make it happen.

If anyone is interested in converting let me know I will be willing to set you up with the right people to make it happen.

Re: Why are modified corvettes have faster ET\'s than Vipers with less HP

I have often wondered about this myself. I forget who told me this but as the saying goes there are different types of horsepower.
My zr1 is rated at 475 hp, yet my gts will take it the 1/4 mile.
After that it's all ZR1. Maybe it's torque VS revs. My zr1's redline is set at 7400 rpm, and it will do the 1/4 in 3rd gear (3:45 stock gears).

The zr1 weighs 3400 pounds, so that does not seem to be an issue.

I'm sure there are a lot more explanations.

Neil,

Is your ZR1 actualy dyno tested to make 475hp or is that what the tunner told you it would make? Chevy has been telling people that the last ZR1's made 405hp, but they would only pull 320 to the wheels.

Now even if your ZR1 did pull that kind of power what was the torque? And besides Vipers come very under rated from the factory, and even stock make more than 475hp and at least 150lb's more torque than the ZR1.

The Viper is not the best drag car because it does not have the best weight transfer. As has been determined,weight transfer can be improved by loosening or removing the front anti-sway bar.

The Viper is a much better road racing car.

Russ,
The zr1 was modified back in the early 90's. The tuner's(KIm Baker {Bakerracing}) package was the 475 hp and 415 tq. I have never put it on a dyno. But i have run consistent 1/4 miles in the 12.2-12.4 range at almost 120 mph (119.8 to be exact) with a 12.2 short time, and no power shifting, but quick off throttle shifts. The GTS does a little better than that, so i have experienced the fact that the GTS is underrated. I just can't figure out why the ZR1 runs away top end. I know it has a very flat power curve, and it will pull to red line and hit the limiter if one is not quick with the shifter. Funny thing is you feel the power in the GTS, it's just violent, where the Vette is smoother. I usually take both cars out in succession, and all i keep thinking is how in the world can the vette be faster (top end) than the GTS, when the GTS feels sooo much faster.
But they are both awesome cars.

In the end i guess you can figure out which car i prefer from looking at my signature. Once you experience a Viper i guess you're bitten, and no antidote in sight.

Have fun and be safe.
