IN MY RECENT SEARCH TO BUY AN RT-10 I FOUND AT LEAST 700 VIPERS OFFERED FOR SALE!

SOME OF THE NEW 2001s HAVE BEEN SITTING AROUND DEALERS FOR ALMOST A YEAR UNSOLD!...

THERE ARE DEALERS THAT ARE OFFERING TO SELL ME BRAND NEW 2001 AND EVEN 2002 RT-1OS IN GOOD COLORS FOR AS MUCH AS $8,000 BELOW STICKER (MSRP)!

THIS IS ALMOST $1,700 BELOW THEIR INVOICE COST!

I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A $2,400 DC HOLD BACK.. BUT WITH THE FLOORING COST ON A $75,000 CAR THE DEALERS ARE LOSING THEIR BUTTS ON THESE CARS.

THERE ARE PRIVATE SELLERS THAT ARE ASKING MORE FOR 2 YEAR OLD USED CARS THAN THE COST OF A NEW CAR..

I AM DYING TO GET A NEW VIPER BUT I AM LITTLE NERVOUS THAT THE BOTTOM MAY FALL OUT ON THE RT-10 AND GTS..

ONE OF THE BEST PARTS ABOUT OWNING EXOTIC CARS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT IF YOU GET A GOOD EXAMPLE AND TAKE CARE OF IT. THESE TYPE OF CARS WILL ALMOST ALWAYS SELL FOR THE SAME OR SOMETIMES MUCH MORE THAN YOU ORIGINALLY PAID!

I AM GOING TO BUY A VIPER TO REPLACE MY 427 COBRA BUT I HOPE I DONT GET KILLED IF I EVER SELL IT..

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INPUT FROM THE VIPER EXPERTS.

Nothing is free in life, if your buying your car for 8k under sticker and say it depriciates another 10k in 3 years you are driving a viper for 250 a month.Lets say it depreciates 15k in 3 years thats about 400 a month, I think thats a good deal to drive a viper. Now I personally think that if the mileage stays around 5000 a year and you take good care of your car you should do well on resale. If your using your cobra as a yardstick for making money thats unrealistic, especially if you bought a cobra when they were 500k and now they are under 300k if you were one of those guys it would not have seen like a very good investment. You don't make money on every deal and with cars you usually lose, just like everything else you buy, with maybe the exception of your house. It cost money to have fun so go spend some and have some fun life is short.

THE VIPER IS AN AMAZING CAR!

VIPERS ARE A GREAT LOOKING ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE AND A TRUELY EXOTIC SUPERCAR!

THEY ARE HANDMADE AND ARE VERY LIMITED PRODUCTION...

WHAT I AM GETTING AT IS THEY DONT FOLLOW THE SAME TRENDS OF OTHER EXOTIC CARS..FERRARI,PORSCHE,LAMBO ECT.

USUALLY WHEN THEY ANNOUNCE THAT A SUPER EXOTIC CAR IS ENDING PRODUCTION THINGS HEAT UP.

THE LAST YEAR OF PRODUCTION WILL BE IN VERY HIGH DEMAND AND GENERATE HIGH PRICES FROM COLLECTORS AND SPECULATORS!

JUST THE OPPOSITE IS HAPPENING FOR THE VIPERS! THE DEALERS CANT SELL THE CARS AND ARE DUMPING THEM AT A HUGH LOSS..

FOR OVER 30 YEARS I HAVE OWNED , DRIVEN AND RACED EXOTIC CARS..

THEY HAVE BEEN A BLAST!

DRIVE THEM! SHOW THEM! RACE THEM!

THEN THE VERY BEST PART!!!!

WHEN YOU SELL THEM YOU MAKE A PROFIT ON YOUR FAVORITE TOYS!

THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE RULE NOT THE EXCEPTION..

REVIEW THE MARKET PRICE ON MANY OF THE EXOTIC CARS AND YOU SEE THAT THEY APPRECIATE ..

THE COBRA WAS A GOOD EXAMPLE..

I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1985 FOR IN THE $70K RANGE. THIS WAS A HIGH PRICE AT THE TIME. 2 YEARS LATER THE CAR HAD SHOWN MODEST APPRECIATION TO AROUND $85K...3 YEARS LATER THINGS GOT CRAZY AND THE CAR WAS OVER $500K. WHEN THE CAR WAS SOLD LAST YEAR IT BROUGHT OVER 3X MY INVESTMENT.. A FANTASTIC CAR AND A GREAT INVESTMENT!

EVERY YEAR THE CARS WENT UP IN VALUE..

HERE IS A LIST OF EXOTIC CARS THAT I HAVE OWNED WITH THE SAME RESULTS.
1985 1995

57 P0RSCHE SPEEDSTER $25K $50K

SHELBY KR CONV $15 $85

FERRARI DINO SPYDER $45 $85

MERCEDES 280SL $25 $35

FERRARI DAYTONA $65 $135

71 440 CUDA CONV $12 $45

PORSCHE 550 SPYDER $45K $350K

JAG E TYPE $20K $55K

PORSCHE 73 RS $25 $75

Most of you guys are very lucky. When I was trying to purchase my first Viper at the end of 93 everyone I could find, which was only a couple where$30,000 to $40,000 over sticker. The standard price seemed to be $99,000. I found one for quite a bit less in mid 94, bought it, and have never looked back. I've had more fun, given more rides, rasied a little money for charity, and have had 8 years of the American Dream.

It's called depreciation. Every car you listed is at least 20 years old. While the Viper is still a car in production it offers a more competitive market to sell them because their simply isn't enough buyers anymore to sell evry on on an order. Besides, I've never heard of anyone paying MSRP for a viper. Give this car 20 years out of production and you'll see it appreciate. But not in 3 years. I see the only ones that are reay going to go up are going to be the popular rare color combos.

I'd also have to take some exception to this idea of 700 unsold Vipers sitting around. Dodge makes a total of, as I recall, around 2000 per year - and most of them are sold before they're made. It's been my experience that a number of dealerships will get a single Viper in, add a $30,000 markup, then wait for someone to buy it. Since that's going to be their one and only Viper for the year, and because someone will eventually pay the huge markup, they have no incentive to sell the car quickly.

Also, many new exotic cars get hammered in resale - try buying a Lotus. Heck, you can even get a 5 year old Diablo for around $120K, that's drugstore.com league depreciation. IMHO, buying a car with a thought to making money is a fool's game - consider the money spent an investment in your life's memories, and don't worry about the resale.

Actually, the cars don't depreciate in value, from what I've seen so far. This is just MHO, but when you purchase a car for $65,000 and sell it 5 years later for 55K or more, a la '97 GTS, I don't think that's bad; Vipers hold thier value very well. And your concern about the SRT devaluing the Gen I and II's is unfounded; I think you will find that the new SRT is going to actually raise the prices on the exising cars, because 90% of the people that want an SRT like the old cars better, style wise. I truely believe that the car will hold it's value for YEARS to come, and will appreciate in 15-20 years, because of low production #'s and exclusivity. Just my $0.02. BTW, if I'm not right, please, someone correct me

Sorry Bigsie, I'll clarify; just make sure the aid is turned ALL the way up, LOL. Just kidding...

I meant that when the SRT's start to hit the streets/market, the demand for the old cars will either go up or remain high, as will the value. I just think that due to the superior styling (Yes, I know it's subjective, but the majority believes it) of the Gen I's and II's will allow the prices to remain stable after the SRT's introduction, and I don't think they will plummet as soon as the Gen III is released. Sorry about the obfuscation, I'm having a hard time with literate thought today

Exec...

Good luck in your search for the Viper. On another note...I noticed that you have owned a "stable" of exotic cars and been extremely smart in your buying habits. As a fellow exotic enthusiast I am very interested in finding out where you buy and sell your cars. In my experience most cars like the ones you have owned are actually traded and moved within a dealer network that handles them...occasionally finding a buyer that wants to keep the car permanently. Any help is appreciated as you seem to be very educated in this arena.

Hemi...

I love your color choice in cars...

Back to your inquiry, I don't think there will ever be a better time to buy a GenI or GenII Viper than right now. Only reason to wait would be if you have to have an SRT. If you wait even another month and the weather warms up, you'll miss your chance at the best price IMHO. Will you make money? Depends on many factors, some listed here already. You have the experience to know which exotics you can turn for a profit, the fact that you're not sure about the Viper says a lot. I don't think the Viper will begin to appreciate for many more years, but I don't think any current car (especially domestics) hold their value better.

Then again..... I could be wrong! (But I already have my GTS!)

Why do you guys care about him using all caps? I've seen complaints about this in other places. I always wondered why people would write in caps and why others would care. I don't think it's a problem.

Buy an used airplane. You never lose money on a good used airplane, as they go up in price every year. The price of the new ones are so high that the used market never goes down.

Big D,
There is no requirement that I know of (not that I know anything), that says you must claim capital gains on a sale of a car. I think it falls into the same class as art. If it appreciates, then good for EXECMALIBU! Tax professionals?
