I had a BMW M Coupe that had huge offsets on the rear. It was kinda cool and kinda strange. You get all sorts of road and brake stuff building up there which you wouldn't see on a normal rim.

The answer? You can have good handling, or good looks. The deep rear spacing on the stock wheels allows for long control arms, which in turn gives you good camber control. With shallow rear spacing (deep offset) you get geometry and handling like an MG or a VW. Not good with 400+ rwhp.
