Why doesn\'t my fan turn off after the car is shut off

I just recently had a problem with my fan not turning off. Even after the car is off, the fan still stays on. I actually had to unhook the fan while the car wasn't in use. What would the reason be for this, and how should I go about fixing it? Thanks.

Are you a single owner? Could you possibly have a Roe fan kit or equivalentthat a previous owner put on? I do and my fan will come on and help cool the car. I've had my fan stay on as much as 15 mintues after the car is turned off. Let it run some time and see if it eventually goes off. Also, does the fan always come on, or just sometimes? My only does it when the car is prety hot i.e. summertime, long trips, or hard driving. Just some thoughts.

Mine comes on and stays on whether the car is on or off as long as the fan is plugged in. I have waited for over half an hour and the fan has not gone off. I don't want to drain my battery, so eventually I just unplug the fan.

Can you answer the question? Are you the original owner? If yes...and you never installed the Roe kit.....park your car and save it FOREVER as it is a mutant!

If you are NOT the original owner.....you have a fan kit. The fan will go off, betcha!

Roe Fan Kit.... sometimes known as the "battery killer".

I am actually the third owner of this viper. I am not exactly sure what a roe kit is. the fan stays on while the car is operating and also when the car is turned off.

The Roe fan kit is designed to stay on as long after the car is shut down to help cool the fluid in the radiator. Not sure if there is a time lime or if it runs as long as the coolant stays above a certain temp. Sounds like to me you could have the Roe kit, but if not, it might be a bad relay.

Could I fix this problem by installing a fan switch in the car?

Yes....adding a switch (basically controls the ground) is easy. I added one. Sean also sells a timer. Simple solutions. :)

Whoa, hang on...the Roe fan kit with the battery timer is one of the smartest small investments a Viper owner can make.

It s NOT a battery killer at all, but rather a very clever and helpful way of removing heat from the radiator during "heat soak". It cycles the radiator fan on as needed when the cooler water in the radiator sinks and is replaced by hot water through the upper radiator hose. The fan goes through ONE and only ONE cycle for EXACTLY the minutes you dial it in for.

With the timer unit installed, cooling is user set BY THE MINUTE providing for absolute battery safety. Tiny and easy to install, the whole unit (with timer) is barely seen. Look at the top of that white timer box and you can see the dial to adjust EXACTLY how long the cooling will run.

This is a smart product and you should feel GREAT that the prior owner saw fit to install it PROTECTING his investment and yours! Now BE SURE IT HAS THE TIMER, as it was an option. If not, buy one and simply add it to the basic Roe unit seen on his web site. I've used mine for 7 years.

Thanks Damn Yankee! After polishing my viper emblems on the valve covers...I needed another project. :D Does the timer come with the Roe fan kit or was another innovation on your behalf? Ordering my fan kit on Monday - Tony

If the fan is running when the motor is cold,it sounds like the circuit is being grounded all the time.If this is the case,I don't think the Roe switch will fix this issue.

My Roe fan controller does not have a timer. It has a temp sensor that you mount on top of the engine. It will run the fan for as long as 10 minutes when the engine gets hot. I'm not sure of the vintage of Yankee's unit, but I believe the current Roe unit does not have a timer.

If your fan is turning on when the engine is cold, there is something wrong. A Roe controller will not fix it. My first guess on what could be wrong would be an electromechanical element in the system, e.g. a relay, but I would need to look at the wiring diagram to make a better guess.

All true and possible...

I was takingthe positon that the man had an early Roe unit and needed the timer option. If he has a Roe unit, a timer from Roe might help.

No Roe unit and all bets are off!

If it is a relay, how much does the part cost, and how much would it cost to install? Thanks.

Re: Why doesn\'t my fan turn off after the car is shut off

If your car is a Gen-II - look at the picture posted by Damn Yankee, In his picture it's under the red plastic strap. It's a 10 dollar relay that will probably cost you 50 to 100 dollars. Assuming that your fan wiring is stock - It would most likely be the low speed relay stuck in the on position, because the high speed relay is powered up by the low relay(in order for high speed to operate both relays have to be on). You can test the relays with a voltmeter.

Just do a quick relay swap to see!

It is a 1994

Different story - as far as location,
You will need to pull the AC/HEATER fan housing on the passenger side - not hard.
The relays are under it.

Re: Why doesn\'t my fan turn off after the car is shut off

Is overheating in the engine a common problem for the 1994 viper? When the fans weren't operating, the engine overheated and emptied about 1/2 gallon of coolant on the ground. Is this probably because of the fan not operating at the time?

You might want to have a Viper tech take a look at your car. It shouldn't over heat or dump fluid. The cooling system might need to be burped.

The fan kit we make is set to go open circuit when the engine is running.
Sounds like you need to ask the previous owner if he knows anything about the fan staying on all the time.
Maybe someone put a jumper wire in place of the relay?
I've seen some people do strange things in order to try and keep the motors cool.

Re: Why doesn\'t my fan turn off after the car is shut off

Most likely a previous owner installed a manual fan switch relay. Check the unused
switch(aka mystery switch) or look under the dash for an added switch.
If it's like mine - when it's turned off, the fans operate in normal mode - controlled by the PCM.
