Will an UNUSED SCT 9550 pull a check engine code, or do I need the dongle installed?-

My car has been throwing a check engine light if I let it sit for awhile, and usually turns itself off after starting the car 3 times (or maybe its the mileage, but seems like a certain number of startups will fix it).

I have a SCT 9550 that I have never been able to use because my engine tuner doesnt have the Viper "dongle" to UNLOCK the unit.

Can I use the SCT hand held to check the code, or will I have to buy an OBD2 reader?

What OBD2 reader works ... ANY of them? Do you have a recommendation?

The car is a 2001 GTS ... thanks :) ---

Most SCT handhelds can pull codes on any matching model of vehicle, but can only alter parameters on the vehicle to which it is married.

Any basic OBD2 scanner will read and clear codes right?

Looks like my tuner doesnt want to use my SCT and its up for sale ... Thanks :) ---
