Wing Nuts In Engine Compartment Replaced - Pics

Yes, I know....obsessive! But hey, I got it done and it is much nicer than before. By itself, doesn't mean much, but it goes along nicely with the change to all stainless steel fasteners to brighten up the engine compartment.

Here are the before/after pics:

Now, these are as close to stainless as I could get, while trying to stay close to the original design - large wings with indents, nylon insert. The ones I used were American standard threads, which I tapped to the correct 8mm x 1.25 metric.

And, yes, my engine compartment is dusty from sitting all winter in my garage.

Yup, Plum, going to change those...must admit, just started this (crazy) project and haven't really taken inventory of all the screws/nuts that need changing. Not sure what those screws are, but they are over the headlight...do they have anything to do with holding/adjusting the headlight?

It must **** to live in those humid climates. I've never seen a car that is cared for rust like that over here in the West. It would have to sit outside for years to get like that. At least the body can't rust, right

Well, its from the previous (original) owner, who lived in Boca Raton, Florida. He owned the car from new and only drove it maybe 600 or so miles a year. Humidity in S. Florida is unbelievable, my wife lived there for years.

Up here (CT), its not bad and I try to keep the humidity level down in the garage with a dehumidifier.

I am trying to get rid of all (most) of the rusty looking screws and nuts. But the car is a good car, clean reports and drives well, so this is a small price to pay...and, gives me something to do that is not expensive.

Yes, I know...thought about anodized/powder coating in red or black. Still might if I find I don't like these, but I don't seem to like red screws/nuts as much as the look of stainless. Just a taste thing, I suppose. I could go the black route, but at this point, not sure. Want to finish changing out everything I can into stainless, allen/hex head, as much as I can and then I can decide. Also, going with more black doesn't brighten up the engine compartment, though it does take care of the surface rusted pieces.

Funny, I read all the posts about doing wheels, superchargers, big brakes, engine mods and then....I write about changing wing nuts! Something about that strikes me pretty funny.

Yup, nuts it definitely is...but, here is the same area with new wing nuts, new stainless screws AND dust cleaned off.

Seems if I shake my head enough, I can actually hear something rattling around, or so my wife says!

When the spring comes and its driving weather again, I will clean everything in the engine compartment and then all this work will certainly add something.

Thanks! I actually found some screws on top of/inside the air-conditioning box that look like they originally were black. I changed those as well to stainless, but may clean them, repaint them black and put them back.

But, I am noticing that the engine compartment is looking better, just because of changing maybe 10-12 bolts/nuts/screws. Maybe its just me, but seeing rusty looking pieces just makes it look poorly taken care of...not to mention a bit worn. I've had the car now close to two years, just hit 6,400 miles and it is always garaged. To me, the inside of the engine compartment should not look worn.
