The dumbest car reviewer of all time Consumer Reports got 4.2 second 0-60 mph time from Gen III Viper compared to 4.3 seconds for C6 Zo6 - then of course said the 911 is the best sports car out there in this price range!

Brutal? Brutal? Brutal is why I bought a Viper. Why I'm so brutal that I leave my wife in the Viper with the windows rolled up during the summer here in Texas while I drink cold beer and shoot pool at the local pub. I even bring my dog inside with me, top that.

The one guy got it: "The V-10-powered Viper has the kind of personality that's lacking from more coolly competent cars like the top-ranked Porsche 911." Come on he called it "brutal!" He got it. And at least they hustled it to 60 more quickly than the Vette.

My first post here as I'm currently looking for an SRT-10.

I happened to notice that issue, and they also tested a cobalt SS S/C (one of my current cars) as going 15.7 in the quarter mile. I managed a 14.3 stock.

WOW. That is weird. I just had a look at mine and it looks like a bunch of the coolly features are broken.

My traction control, my heads display, the mirror for applying makeup, etc. All broken or missing. Very strange.

I checked again and apparently my Viper won't even drop 8 cylinders when I reach 65 miles per hour on the hiway.

My fuel economy is going to be brutal.

Yikes. I sure the driver will be very happy in his skirt.

SPORTS car. Did he miss the words SPORTS.

Exactly.

They say they are testing sports cars, but end up rating the vert Lexus as the only one "recommended" - they need to realize when rating sports cars, what matters are things dealing with sports cars! I.e., power and performance! Nothing else!

The only things that matter are power and performance in sports cars? I don't think so; that criteria is reserved for RACE cars. There has to be other criteria for street cars which includes the Viper. Many of you wealthy enthusiasts have other vehicles for "more suitable" daily driving or longer cruises. Some of us (including myself) don't. A true supercar does everything well. I don't think the Viper was intended to be one but it certainly does in the performance criteria (all around performance). The Viper requires some adaptation which reviewers will never experience. I can take my Viper on very long drives (all day) and do fine (this is where cruise control would help though) but I'm 5'11" and a trim 180 lbs - Viper size. I think the seats are great and a must for a car that corners like this one. I'm very aware of what CR looks for in cars and the Viper experience isn't something they will ever understand or even want to (what's their audience looking for?). Comfort and convenience are very high on their list and understandably so considering their audience. (They won't appreciate extreme performance.) some of you don't want it but I think it's nice as long as it doesn't compromise the performance experience.

How many of you enjoy or appreciate the Viper more the longer you own it? As enthralled as I was when I first drove it, I appreciate my SRT10 more today.

Their own opening comments say much about their perspective:

"The 911 was tested against the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the Dodge Viper and other performance vehicles in a competitive test of LUXURY sports cars."

The prices of the eight cars in the magazine's most recent tests ranged from $45,545 for a Lotus Elise to $105,855 for a Mercedes-Benz SL550."

It says VOLUMES that these guys would actually consider the Viper, Z06, and Lotus Elise LUXURY sports cars in the first place!


Having Consumer Reports judge performance cars is like asking ballroom dancing fans to judge a karate competition.

Wait... you WORK? Don't you know you have to be independently filthy rich to own a Viper? It's a prerequisite.

Well... at least that's how vendors treat me when I'm getting an estimate on anyting after they see the Viper.

Comfort and convenience are so far down the list of concern for sports cars as to be virtually of no concern when evaluating them. I put 80k on a 98 RT/10, most of it with the top off as a daily driver - it was "comfortable" enough, and I couldn't care less, as I was driving it to be an enjoyable SPORTS car - as in for its POWER and PERFORMANCE - not for whether my seat cushion was 10% more comfy than some other car - who gives a [******]?! Not true sports car enthusiasts!
