I love the saying on top of the truck...

That is so wild.

How does that work anyway? Is the subject object stationary and the boom rolls past on the truck? Where on the equipment does the X-ray come from and what is the back stop it is shot against?

LIVIPER,

You are correct, the vehicle being X-Rayed is stationary.
The truck has a high torque and precision electric scan
motor for moving the truck over any road legal vehicle.
If you look at the picture above on the side of the flag
there is a vertical window under the X.
The X-Ray (3.8 Million electron Volts) comes out of there.
It is generated with a linear accelerator.
It is collimated and exits in a fan beam. The detectors are
located on the boom in an L shaped array. There are over
5000 detectors. This contributes to the high resolution.
We have been able to image a 1 mm wire in air.
This truck also can see through 11 inches of steel.
Behind the detectors is lots of lead as a beam stop.
I was in a rush so I will have better images of the Viper in the future.

Thats too sweet. How about putting it up on jack stands or a platform to get the whole car in?

AndyR,

Thats exactly what I am going to do the next time.
I also am going to be in it for one or two scans
I was seriously rushed in getting this done.
This was all in fun, but work still is a priority :usa:

And why is the image squished? It looks cartoonish with that ****** roofline. I'm guessing the speed of the boom was not constant.

Thats fantastic, John! Great job!

Question- Does all that voltage ever generate any static in the object being scanned? Looks like you got a 1/4 tank of gas there....

That's cool. Can you use ramps instead of jacks so that you get a picture of the suspension with normal compression?

AviP,
It was a fast scan therefore squished...
I think it kind of looks cool like some of the Avatar
cartoon vipers
Vic,
No problems the dose is rather low
Good call on the gas level BTW
LIVIPER,
Next time all of the stops are pulled...
Ramps, jack stands, normal scan speeds...
A work in progress to be continued.
