OK TOM - Mobil 1 5-40 Turbo Diesel vs. Mobil 1 ESP Delvac 5-40

We have the Grail Trail, but somehow the "Fuel Trail" or "Oil Trail" just doesn't do it. Come up with a good name and we can probably talk the mods into it.

OK TOM - Mobil 1 5-40 Turbo Diesel vs. Mobil 1 ESP Delvac 5-40

You have to offer free beer for instant response, otherwise one of my Bat-elves send me a PM that says "hey, you should look at this." Everyone, please: I have answered lots of questions here and would be happy to keep it up. I do have a real job now so don't have as much time to look for...

    Removing cam on Gen1.

Chuck Tator has a method where he removed the trans cross member and lowers the transmission end to remove the cam.

Billet steering rack bushings - great upgrade

Understood, thanks. Come spring time I'll inspect with a crow bar and see if the bushings have become "more compliant" than designed.

Billet steering rack bushings - great upgrade

Mike, in the case of steering rack bushings, are not the tires enough of an energy absorber? I figured it is the sidewall roll stiffness that provides a little compliance.

Billet steering rack bushings - great upgrade

What was the indication that made you think you should do this? I have ~108K and these are the kinds of things that are on the bucket list. TIA

Marv, your note was worth the VCA membership alone. Thanks.

    Transmission Fluid "redux"

Yes. I have to add gobble-gook because a three letter reply is too short for the "system."

    Transmission Fluid "redux"

Howdy, all. For the T-56's that allow the synthetic oil, you will want API GL-4 and NOT GL-5. As mentioned above, GL-5 additive chemistry is what the mouse milk vendors use for parlor games - it makes for spectacular show in wear or friction bench tests, but the chemistry is so aggressive it...

Gen 1 clutch lowering kit in classifieds!

I didn't realize mine has been in for over 5 years, trouble-free. An excellent product, even if I have to pat myself on the back. For the lucky buyer (or anyone else) that needs the installation instructions to see how simple this is, just send me a PM, it'll bounce to my email, and I'll send...

    OK Tom, Let's Talk GAS!!

My company sells additives to global and NAFTA brands, to terminals that supply local stations, and to chemical distributors that service the regional market. I'm going to sidestep that question. I would avoid stations with really low volume sales; if the outside of the station looks crappy...

Happy to hear that. Hard to describe it.

    94 Slave cylinder

Follow the hose from the master cylinder (up at the footbox) down to the connection. This hose is covered with a heat protection cloth. There are two ends for the "quick disconnect" pair and on the pedal side the fitting has a white plastic ring around it. You need to push the quick...

    OK Tom, Let's Talk GAS!!

No, probably not. Higher octane is typically less volatile, and there has to be enough that vaporizes for the entire charge to burn efficiently. Unless the compression ratio was also increased (heat of compression would help vaporization) the 91 is better.

    OK Tom, Let's Talk GAS!!

George, I don't know if you would have the time for this, but I'm a little nervous in running two year old fuel down to empty. The fuel has lost all the lighter components, the heavy ones left behind will make the engine run poorly, be hard to start, and maybe smell bad. Plus, if it sets any...

    OK Tom, Let's Talk GAS!!

Different type of nitrogen. These are soluble, not solid or gaseous versions. They are the massive majority of many kinds of cleaning addiitves. Think of ammonia, the common cleaner. Works pretty good, and is the simplest form of such a nitrogen compound. To make it work in fuels, chemists...

SeaFoam Vs. Techron, anyone have any opinions?

good... better... best... One measure is whether the marketer claims Top Tier or not. It shows that there is much more than the "good" EPA minimum; it is a "better' level. Sunoco is not on the list, Mobil is. If Mobil used even more additive, there isn't a way to know this other than...

SeaFoam Vs. Techron, anyone have any opinions?

Thanks. It's not another oil company, but a global chemical company that happens to also sell fuel and lubricant additives. It'll keep me up to speed, and more.

SeaFoam Vs. Techron, anyone have any opinions?

This page shows BG 44K is part number 208. BG Company This is a list of MSDS sheets for BG products. Index page BG shouldn't be able to hide chemically active materials in the "petroleum distillate mixture" row. The other component is a solvent. Many of their other products are only...

    Viper hub with 5-bolt pattern?

Onlooker comment - I built a replica Cobra with a 340 Duster drivetrain (340, A-833 4-speed, 8.75 rear) and had a Mustang II front suspension with home-designed 3-link rear suspension. It was a crappy car when it first ran, but was Solo II E-Mod champ several years later. I learned a ton about...

SeaFoam Vs. Techron, anyone have any opinions?

Since I now have a "real" job and a longish commute, I don't visit here as often. When these questions come up feel free to send me a PM (Plumcrazy!); it bounces to send me an email and I'll reply soon after. Chevron Techron is a polyether amine fuel detergent and in the concentration used...

    Average MPG?

With my '94 on the Taconic Parkway, a 52 mile one-way commute, I get a consistent 19 MPG, same as my '06 Charger. Doesn't say much for modern technology, huh? If I could get snow tires, I'd drive the R/T all year.

    Oil change question...

You'll be fine. The oil you are likely to put in will be a 0W-xx or 5W-xx and they are rated to be sucked up the oil pump tube and temperatures of -35C or thereabouts. No worries about +30F.

    Viper F1

F1 rules since 2007 (?) required engines to be 95 kg (209 lbs.) According to Wikipedia, gen 3 Viper engines are 500 lbs. Hey, a little more front roll stiffness and all will be well! Can you find tires in the size you want? Those are oddly small 15" or so diameter?
