04 Engine in an 06 Crank Sensor Issue

HELP!!

I have been trying to figure out what I am going to do about an issue I overlooked. I have a 2006 Viper and the bottom end got ruined when I rented it out and they had a bit too much fun on it. I bought a 2004 bottom end and have been in the process of getting the rest of the engine ready for install. HOWEVER, I did not realize that the 2004 motor uses a crank sensor that is completely different and is in a completely different area.

Long story short, the 04 crank sensor used the flywheel to judge the position of the crank and the 06 uses the actual crankshaft and is located mid-way near the bottom of the engine. They both have three wires. I was thinking about making a ghetto piggyback, but I figured that will probably not work as they read from two different components. I really don't feel like buying an engine harness for a plug.

Thank you guys ahead of time for the help. This community is a wealth of knowledge. I am sure someone has a better idea than I.

I have a vague recollection that leads me to ask: Is your 2004 engine out of a Viper powered Ram SRT-10 ?

The important thing would be the tooth count. if both engines used the same tooth setup I would think it would work regardless of where the sensor is located or what it's reading off of as long as the signal it produces is the same. An extension harness might be the easiest way to go if the 06 setup won't reach back to the 04 position.

The engine is out of a Dodge Viper, not the dodge Ram. The tooth count should be the same because they both use the same flywheel. I wish the solution was as easy as using an extension harness, but the plug for the sensor in the 2004 I am putting in is completely different. Luckily they both have three pins.

Ah, okay. So you'd need an actual conversion harness. I think there are some sites that tell you what connector is used on harnesses. You might look there and see what you can find. The first kinda looks like a Weatherpack style connector while the second is maybe a Metri-Pack style? If you can find a part number on the connector body itself (on the harness in the car) you might be able to cross reference it or identify what kind it is. That would get you half way there at least.

Thank you all for your input. I was able to get the car running. I used a dodge "cam sensor" harness off of amazon and it fit. The pain was not only figuring out which wire was which, but realizing that I had put back in the 2006 flywheel and not the 2004 flywheel that needed to be installed. The 2004 flywheel has notches in it that are used by the crank sensor to identify the position of the crank. Once I swapped to the correct flywheel it started right up and sounds fantastic. As for the knock sensors mentioned, I ghetto rigged them to the motor by drilling two horizontal holes into the aluminum fins on top of the motor where the knock sensors were installed on the newer motor. It seemed like the most simple solution and so far no Check engine lights. Fingers crossed. ;)

nice find! Yeah If the ghetto way I did mine doesn't end up working I will for sure go this route. Thanks for the tip! Everything seems good so far. :)
