How many of the 1996 GTS were earmarked as Indy Pace Cars? And what denotes an actual example beside the sticker kit? Did certain vins or sequence qualify for this honor and documentation should be evidant? I thought only twenty or so examples were produced.
SHORT, In order: 2; In museums = documenation; No; Wrong;
LONG VERSION:
Earmarked? 1996? {92 was similar story) Two were built as OPCs. Totally different. Open Roofs (no sunroof) Instrument panel like a Comp Coupe. Radios, Electronics, Strobes. They were PVP cars, not retail cars. They were built at CAAP but converted off-site in MI at Masco-Tech, who also converted the Indy Pace Trucks.......
One is in the Indy OPC Museum. One is owned by Chrysler and warehoused in MI or at CAAP or at WPC Museum...and sometimes historic displays. One more PVP mule car was AT THE IMS for promo use and show. Decals Only. IT WAS SOLD.
96 Indy Winner Driver Buddy Lazier won a 'replica': Decals Only. (Last in Colo.)
96 Team Owner Ron Hemelgarn (IND)bought a dealer-created replica.(Roanoke Dodge...ask John Gastman who sold that car for him?!) In Ron's collection.
All the other "PACE CARS" were OEM licensed decals added by Dealers or Owners. Not by Dodge. Mine does have the decals, plaque, License plate, AND the strobe lights! I have also seen unlicensed all-white VINYL DECAL COPY made of the OPC decals... (Sheesh)
