I have seen 1996 RT/10s advertised with 450 and even 460 Horsepower stock... What's the scoop on the which models transitioned from the original 400 horsepower motor to the higher rated engines during 1996 and 1997...

Looks like there could be some special editions and limited releases ?

Seems inconsistent...

Gen I Motor ('92-'95) 400 H.P.
Gen I 1/2 Motor (RT/10 models only '96) 415 H.P.
Gen II Motor ('96-'02 GTS, '97-'02 RT/10) 450 H.P.
Gen III Motor ('03-'05) 500 H.P.
Gen III Motor ('06) 510 H.P.
Gen IV Motor ('08-present) 600 H.P.

With the gen I and gen III motors the engine had stayed the same but due to changes in the way h.p. rateing were given dodge was able to claim higher numbers for the same motor.

So anyone claiming that their 1996 RT/10 came from the factory with 450 or 460 hp is wrong ? Also thought I saw something about ACRs with 460hp ?

I would say they are wrong. However, with the engines being hand built they did not always come out the same. I have heard that variences were commor. Especially in the Gen I cars. The ACR I just got rid of was dynoed by a previous owner and according to the run the car was rated at over 500 h.p. at the motor.

I did forget about the ACR motor which was the same as a Gen II motor. The only difference was that it came with K&N air filters and smooth tubes from the factory giving it a 10 h.p. boost.
So anyone claiming that their 1996 RT/10 came from the factory with 450 or 460 hp is wrong ? Also thought I saw something about ACRs with 460hp ?

Wasn't the '96 RT (very simply) a Gen 1 engine with Gen 2 exhaust in a Gen 2 frame? Therefore the 400HP engine got a 15HP boost by going to rear exhaust... or at least that was the story that sticks in my head.

One of our members just picked up an 05' copper vert and he thinks he saw on the web some where that some editions like his copperhead vert came with 535 HP. Is there any truth to that or more web gossip?

Right. The ACR Gen 2 came with hi flo intake tubes with filters that gave an additional 10hp over the 450 hp models.

Sounds like wishful thinking...or just plain old B.S.

That said, STOCK 2003-2006 Vipers were advertised as having 501 "brake horsepower" by my memory...BUT can be retroactively re-classified (good for bragging rights!!!) as 510 hp after the newer SAE hp definition cane out...around 2007(give or take a year).
