Are folks saying "track" car or "race" car? two very different things and seems like the definitions either get confused or vary dramatically from person to person.

Who in the hell would pay 180 k for a gtr. That car is ugly. When they were 67 k I thought the price was about right in 2009.

But 180 k for such a big regular looking car? I just dont get the appeal.

Dont get me wrong. 130k is a lot for a viper TA. But tleaste it looks like a special car to match that special performance.

I applaud Nissan for besting the TA. But didn't they add 70k to the price to be able to do it?

Just not feeling that...

The 2014 Viper TA, per the recent price change, is now $100,885 plus destination, gas guzzler, etc.

It was never 130K. It used to be $115K plus destination, gas guzzler, etc. The TA sticker price was 120,480. Now it will be 105,480. The 2015.5 TA 2.0 may be a bit less if the increase in MPG to 20 MPG results in a reduction in gas guzzler tax. I think it will result in a reduction. The current amount is $2600. The data below suggests that it will drop to $2100 for 2015. This is another $500 dollar savings for 2015.

Unadjusted MPG (combined)Taxat least 22.5No taxat least 21.5, but less than 22.5$1000at least 20.5, but less than 21.5$1300at least 19.5, but less than 20.5$1700at least 18.5, but less than 19.5$2100at least 17.5, but less than 18.5$2600at least 16.5, but less than 17.5$3000at least 15.5, but less than 16.5$3700at least 14.5, but less than 15.5$4500at least 13.5, but less than 14.5$5400at least 12.5, but less than 13.5$6400less than 12.5$7700

FINALLY got my C&D today.

And on the pricing sheet, they list the TA as $134,680 base price and $134,680 "as tested".

There's a little asterisk under the table that denotes "Base price includes all performance-enhancing options." Of which, on the TA there were none. Before the $15k price cut, which obviously the Lightning Lap took place prior to, the TA was out the door at $120,480 including the destination charge and gas guzzler tax.

Anyone have any idea where they found an extra $14,200 to tack on?

Listed correctly, the TA should have been into the LL3 category.

I will write a letter to Car & Driver to complain, straight away!

With this price adjustment, the Vipers are priced just were they need to be now.The car it self is outstanding(esp TAS).Some future updating and the Snake should be fine.

Base price: $84,995 plus delivery of $1995 plus possible reduced gas guzzler tax due to one MPG increase in mileage of $2100 equals: $89,090. Unless they decide to reduce the delivery charge.

i didn't see anywhere in the article who was doing the driving? At least one of the magazines uses Randy Pobst who is a well known race car driver..... all of the time comparisions even from one year can be odd if the driver sucked.... even worse when you compare different years..... VIR was widened and repaved in a few spots which supposedly make it quicker.....but it may have been a hot humid day which would more than offset that.... o well... still fun to magazine race....

why are the Z28 tires so much better than the TA tires even though they both have similar wear ratings (60 i think).?

I think it needs to be noted as well that VIR was repaved at the end of 2013, and is now 2-3+ seconds faster (on the shorter 2:00 full course) than it was when the ACR tested. Were the ACR to test on this couse (grand course) it would be in the 2:43-2:45 range.

The ACR is still a beast, will take a Gen V ACR to have a legitimately faster track car.

The video of the Viper run is online and, as one having a ton a racing laps there, the driving sucked. Missed apexes, wrong gear on some spots, etc. The Z28 driver was on it. If driver of the Z28 drove the Viper (he did not) you can knock 2 seconds off the published lap time. Easily.

Its all driver dependent anyway. I was at COTA Viper in a lightly modified Golf R and I was running faster lap times than 90% of the Vipers out there. On paper, they all should be kicking my butt!

No doubt, but i have to assume car and driver have better than well below average DE drivers doing test laps.

You are right, and its all relative. So many of the cars these days are so damn close. Aside from drag racing, it would require a driver to hang it out to stand out from a group made up of super cars and competent drivers. (I am excited to get my TA 2.0 after exploring the limits of 9 straight Porsches!) I have not studied the ACR, but I would imagine it takes a better driver to get that car going fast.
