That seems crazy high to me...oil is on sale at Farm and Fleet for $5/qt. I can't change it as I have no lift or even a place to go with the oil...

Also seems scary to take it to some kind of quick lube.

Thoughts?

You can service it yourself for a lot less. My dealer charges $79.99 for the service. I know we use full synthetic and pretty sure it requires 8 quarts of oil. That's $40 for oil and $10-$12 for a filter to do it yourself.

I change mine with a low profile jack to get the car up and a couple stands. Super easy. Use synthetic oil... Mobile 1 at the minimum. Under $80 and you know its done right!

About $80 too high. Last time I paid for an oil change it was about $120. Maybe purchase the oil yourself. 11 quarts of 0w40 for your GEN IV and you're good to go. :)

It depends on the cost of oil. In Canada we pay a bit more. What price is your moble 1 0w40 a liter?

My local dealer quoted $129 for their viper tech to change the oil on my '06. I have a lift and have changed oil on other vehicles but wanted a tech to look over the car. The service manger explained that they make about $20 on the job as they don't get deals on the synthetic. He even offered for me to bring my own oil/filter and the tech would do the service and look over the car for $20 - I'll be doing this in the fall.

Can't hurt to ask if you can bring your own supplies.

I have taken mine to Jiffy Lube.

Called ahead and got a price and made it clear that I would be driving the car over the pit. No problem, just go slow and make sure you can clear the lip around the pit. Brought Mobil 1 and Mopar filter and watched over the 2 employees like a hawk. They understood and were OK with it. Made him show me the old seal from the old oil filter. They were super carefull and I gave them a $20 tip. It was all good.

I paid around $130.00 for my last oil change at my dealer that services my ACR. They aren't the closest; but, they really know how to take care of a Viper, has something to do with the owner has a Viper.

Expect to pay $120 to $140 for an oil change. You can save some on the oil if you by it on sale, but most dealers are paying 6-7 dollars a quart so the resale it for about 9 dollars a quart. You need to use the factory oil filter as this Viper specific filter has a oil relief valve that is not the same as the aftermarket filters.

Dealership charges me like $15 if I bring my oil oil and filter

I do the same thing. Its the best of both worlds. You get the oil and filters that you want, but a certified tech to give a good look over the car.

I stock pile oil when it goes on sale. I think I bought like 30-35 quarts of oil last time it was on sale.

Like MTGTS above, my local Dodge dealership lets me bring my own oil and oil filter. They charge $2.00 more than his dealership, which is $18.00. More than fair.

Keep in mind that many Dealerships will only let the Viper Tech do the oil changes. They are going to get paid more than having the guy on the Lube rack do it, so it is a matter of choice.

Not saying the $209 isn't high, but oft times the price may be a bit higher as most vehicles will just go to the Lube/Oil Specialist.

Yep. I bring the Mobile 1 oil and my car to Tomball Dodge. For about 25 bucks + tax, They provide the lift, the filter, and the Viper Tech. Pretty awesome deal if you think about it.

Thanks for all the feedback and info. Thanks Wikkid for the offer to use your lift. I spoke to a friend who has a lift here in Verona and is willing to help. I'm going to pick up some of the Mobile 1 0w-40 from Farm and Fleet and order a filter from VPA.

Sounds like the one thing to be careful of is gasket from the old filter...anything else to be aware of?

Also, should I just wait until the end of the driving season and put it away with fresh oil, or does it really matter?

I am over in Cottage Grove and have helped many a Viper owner get intimate with their cars for the first time. I have a hoist, soda in the fridge, and best of all, a fair amount of knowledge.

True story: Took 2 5 qt jugs, 1 qt jug and an oil filter to my local dodge store (the 1 I bought my 1st Viper from) to change the oil in my '2 ACR. They assured me only their Viper tech would touch the car. As I was leaving after it was done I heard a thud in the back. Stopped to check and found 1 of the 5 qt jugs unopened.

Turned out the tech was busy on a diesel truck so the service manager did the oil change. When I showed him, he looked right at me and said it only takes 6 qts and it showed full on the dip stick at 5 qts. I pulled the stick with him there and it didn't even show on the stick. He was trying to bluff that he knew Vipers!

Cobraken,

Be pleased to know that these items will hopefully become a thing of the past , as SRT has been listening to both Dealers and consumers over the past years about needing high quality training for Viper Techs. Dealerships in the future will have extensively trained Techs or they will not be selling Vipers. Stories like yours should evaporate, as we both know this is the type of thing that should never happen in the first place. High quality service is not just a benefit to the customer, it is a requirement , in my mind , to elevate the Viper back to the hallowed ground it stood on for so many years.

Respectfully,
Bill Pemberton
