I know on some cars you can get steeper gears as a option..usually these cars with the higher numerically gears weigh 10-15 pounds less than the lower numerically gears..

example auto c5 vette with 2.73 gears was 3320 pounds while auto c5 vette with 3.15 factory optioned more agressive gears was 3310 pounds..

Anyone even measured the weight differance between the stock 3.07 gears and 3.33/3.55/3.73 gears..

What about you guys that sell and ship gears...Any differance in shipping weights between the 3.33/3.53/.3.73?

Just trying to shed weight any way I can without ripping out the interior..thanks

hahaha

Dropping 100 lbs is worth a tenth, .10 so 10 lbs won't make much of a difference. It is rotational mass so I guess is could be worth a touch, but seems kind of silly.

Less weight = less metal

Less metal = less strength

Less strength = less strength

That's just my common sense analogy. I'll check with the attendant at my Holiday Inn when he gets done setting up the hot waffle buffet.

a pound or 2 at the most is the difference. Open diff vs some type of limited slip is a much bigger difference.

Better off eating a VERY HIGH FIBER diet and taking a good download before driving the car......primitive but effective:omg: And for what it's worth I am going with 3:73's pretty soon.

I was thiunking 10-20 pounds..surely someone who distributes 3.33 and 3.55 and 3.73 can confirm if their is indeed and weight differance..

It all adds up..

I think my CF hood is 10 pounds lighter if I remember correctly..Then the findanza light weight fly wheel is close to 20 pounds lighter..then the underdrive pulley shed 2-3 pounds ect...Then the titanium exhaust and no cats and no cross pipes was around 70 pounds lighter...So it all adds up and if i can lose another 10-20 pounds from a smaller gear (higher numerically) then it is what it is..

Just curious?

I went to a gear shop tonight..

had one beer and then did what I went their for a did a few dyno runs.

Their were two tables with about 15 gears and about 8 of them were taller gears that weighed less. I was halfway through my first pull and most of the taller gears were clapping and cat calling ect. I dont drive good but they were all drunk.

Well one of the shorter gears seemed pretty annoyed that the gear sitting next to him was interested in my pulls. he then sat in front of me and started talking to one of his other short gear friends. They were looking at me and acting like the taller gears and cat calling and talking in *** voices with *** hand movements ect.

Now Im smart enough to realize that this was just an act of jelousy and kept my kool through my second pull. I then got up and walked to the bathroom. I have bad vision (wear coke bottle glasses so thick I look like Charlie Chan) but I swear I saw him say "look he's leaking fluids" as I was walking away to the bathroom.

I took my piss and then took a long look in the mirror and the more I thought about how this gear seemed to be insulting me the more mad I got about it. maybe that was childish of me but it is what it is...

The better half of me told me to just leave. He's drunk and jelous that his tall gear was looking at me and dosent realize that he just insulted me.

The Man in me said f&ck that shi$. If he wants a peice then he shall have it....

I decided to go outside and smoke my cigerette and then go sit back exactly were I was and see if he was indeed insulting me..

As I was smokeing he and another short gear and the tall gear who was enjoying my singing came out.

He looked very surprised to see me. I greeted him with a hard stare as yes at this point I was pissed.

Now the next part is not to brag but only to paint a picture. I was sitting down while sitting in a dimly litted room when I belieave he made these insults. But I am a 5 foot 2, 120 pound guy who's been living on salad and water for over 10 years..

He was a 3:07 gear who looked to be in good shape. Not nearly as thick as me but no pushover eighter (he was hardened steel and heat treated)

Well when he came out I met him with the hard stare and aproached him (again i was pissed)

The gear then reaches out his hand to shake mine and said man you dyno'd really good..

At this point I was confused. Had the gear been insulting me. or did he just realize that I was bigger than him and ready to throw down????

Well they started talking about this and that and he said that tomorrow he was gonna have to do an hour of tuning. I then said 'you look like your gonna need more than an hour"

suddenly the other friend he was with and the taller gear got really quiet and had bewildered looks on their faces..

he never made ring and pinion contact and then they all went back inside.

I thought about going back in to were they were sitting again just to see what would happen. but just went home.

on the way home I thought maybe I was wrong or maybe the gear was talking shi$ about me and I should have just called him on it..

Dont know...just one ting I cant stand is when these 3:07 gears who weigh like 10# more think they are somthing special and talk crap to someone who's by his self while they have multiple friends around them...

Should of and could of..honestly the more I think about it the more I wish I would have beat the Sh*t out of him.

Or maybe Im the wrong one in this situation?

Just venting

YOU are NUTS!, LOL

The items you are comparing are made of different materials, lighter materials means less weight, the gears are made from the same materials, what you are asking is if I build a staircase that spans the same distance, as another staircase that spans the same distance and both are made from the same material yet one has 32 stairs and one has 30 stairs, which one is lighter, ??? they are probably the same since less steps, in one, yet they are bigger steps, since they still span the same distance so therefore they are BIGGER.

Not a gear expert, but if the ring gear gets thinner, the pinion gets fatter and vice a versa. So, total material weight difference would be minimal IMO.

Rotating Mass is Rotating Mass.......but not exactly relevant.

The 3:07 probably weighs MORE than a 3:55. We'll weigh some and report Tuesday, but it wont matter .001 sec even at top end..... [MAN, you guys can pick the nits! ]

Not all gears are created equal..... we have seen SAME RATIO gears from different manufacturers weigh more, and even at a cursury look appear obviously "meatier" ie a Gen 1 -355 and a Gen 2-3-4 -355 can be substantially "cheaper" in metal mass, but they all can fit !

Well, and someone should remind you that changing your gear ratio will have a heck-of-a-lot more impact on the performance characteristics of your car than the 10 or 20 pounds.

When I changed from 3.07 to 3.55, everything changed. I dropped 20 mph from the top of 4th gear, so now I row all the way around the track. But I can positively eat cars alive accelerating out of corners, including some that can easily walk away from me on the straights.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve with the Jenny Craig program, but changing your ratio will be much more dramatic than any 20 pound reduction.

Just trying to weigh all the cons..if their is indeed even a 10 pound weight differance then it is a pro..people say...ahhh what ever ten or fifteen pounds is nothing ect...but when you hit the scale 32990 seems a lot kooler than 33010.....you know..kinda like the guy who is asked..whatll she do and proudly proclaims...she runns 11s..when in reality he can once in a while squeak 11.9s..but that guy stuck at squeaking 12.0s and 12.1s has to say she runs low 12s when asked the same question...

Nits Picked. We were actually surprised at the results. As promised Here Ya Go, straight off the scales: 2001+ gearsets in LBs.

307 15.0
333 14.8
355 15.0
373 15.0
391 15.0
410 15.0
488 15.5

Smokin, I am a bit confused.....you said "can easily walk away from me on the straights"....... Still? Did you mean that? Id be curious who/what can straigthline walk away from you at PRP.... Did I read that wrong? It does have a long front straight!

All the same. Go figure LOL.

Not at all the same dammnit! There is a spread of .7 lbs there! That's a whole 317.514 grams! We are not talking milligrams here, but actual full GRAMS. This could be the difference between, um... something, to someone, somewhere. I am swapping my gear set out this week.

Hey Twister, don't forget to take out the TPMS in your tires. There is at least a pound or two of rotating mass there!!!:lmao:

I'm voting this thread as a candidate for the most anal performance thread on this site. LOL

All of them are made of the same material, all require the same contact tolerances, and all of them fit the same physical dimensions. The difference is that the ring gears get thinner, but this is made up by the pinion gear getting larger. Lower numerical gear has a stronger pinion with more shallow teeth. Higher numerical gear has a weaker pinion with large teeth that like to shear under high power. Often times, you will find that the lower numerical gear set is the strongest, since it is typically the pinion teeth that fail first.

I have to agree with you on this one. I made an assumption based off of what I thought i knew and lost the umption and ended up looking like the front 3 letters...

Ill make up for it with my next topic though I promise..I found somthing last night I have been waiting to see for a while..;)

It had better be in the Chicks with Vipers thread then.
