$45,000 Offer on 1993 Viper Do I wait for him so he can buy it?

I showed my 93' Viper to a 19 year old young man who will be in my town until February. When he heard that I was going to sell it for $40,000 he said he would to buy it for $45,000 if I would wait until May of next year. He wanted it really bad. So we shook hands on it and their were witnesses that he said this. I told him that I needed the money by May and that the wait would put me in a hard place as we are building a new house in another state and I would otherwise have it sold by then. He said that he is getting a new job that is paying very well and he will have the money.

Should I still try to sell it otherwise? It is a verbal contract that could be binding on both ends. I think I am going to send him a purchase contract. After all I'm storing the car for him and losing potential buyers. He's seems responsible.

The car has a little over 20,000 miles on it. Lots of accessories, bra, storage bags, interior, soft top, hard top (cap), fastback top.

I do not believe there is a legally binding contract, certainly not one that you should rely upon. Move on and sell to a real buyer.

Look for other sellers. You also haven't told us how long ago he wanted to buy the car. If it was just last week keep in contact with him.

Edit: I saw he wants to pay for it in May, the kid can probably barely afford the car even if he saves right until then. Look for other sellers and when the kid is ready he can most likely find one a little cheaper, he most likely had an impulse reaction.

From experience, deals like this have only ever wasted my time and money.

Like someone stated, have the kid put down a non refundable $5,000 deposit. If he says he can't, how would you expect him to come up with $45k if he can't come up with $5k?

Post it for $45k and take any offer you get over $40k. Looking around, there are a lot of RT/10's selling for low 30's now-a-day's so sell it sooner than later if you can.

Your kidding me right, when I was a young man I wanted a lot of things to, It will be many years till that kid can buy anything more than a ice pop. Move on.

While I suspect that most of us would not have agreed to this type of deal in the first place, your kindness to this young man is commendable. At this point, I would not contact the potential buyer until AFTER I had an official talk with my personal attorney. Then, you can decide on your course of action in an informed manner with special consideration to the laws in your particular state. Good luck to you both.

That's what I was thinking. There were a lot of witnesses when he made the offer. He said when he get back that he will have a position that he would be making $200,000. I'll believe it when I see it. the guy who offered him the job probably said that he could make $200,000 is sales. Maybe a commission off that. I don't know of to many 19 year old making that kind of money unless they are in their family business I can just see him getting back and his parents, friends and family have to say about getting a Viper. I just found out he never drove a straight stick. LOL If he is that impulsive than I really don't want his death or permanent injury on my mind. I'm going to make him an offer so he can get out of it. I figured that the cost of not selling the car would cost me close to $4,500 in storage, loss of a sale, etc. So I'm going to make him sign a contract to see if he has woken up. Everything you guys said is what I was thinking. It's always great to have reinsurance form you guys.

DJSviper you have a good heart, but just another thought,you maybe saving his life by moving on, if I had a 1st gen viper when I was 19, I would not be here today, way to much car for a to little brain.

I wouldn’t be concerned about his age or income. I would however be concerned with doing business with someone who thinks it’s reasonable to ask me to hold a sale for nine months without bringing up a large deposit and signing a contract in the same sentence. That’s either ignorant of common civility or selfish. You could educate him about your expectations and he balks at a large deposit and signed contract, you’ll learn it was the latter.

No brainer, move on. Odds are when he is ready to buy which may be awhile he will shop around for better deals unless you have a deposit and contract

My experience in this Country is, that a hand shake means nothing unless you have it in writing with a down payment.
Get a down payment or move on after having him told so.

I put him to the test and he failed. You never know if daddy's got a lot of money. I think he was just showing of in front of friends and girls at the time. The girls were not impressed saw right through him.

Hi Twinturbosd It is a an early 1993 Viper. Anyway that is what the seller told me. He toled me they tried to get a rear antenna in that it was being made in 1992 but Chrysler wouldn't go for it. I bought it from a designer on the viper team. He said he worked on the design of the wheels. I just took him for his word because it really didn't matter to me. Bought it in Michigan. He was the second owner.
milage. 20389. I think it was the 386 th car built on 6/7/1993
