Just changed the oil and filter... what started out as an easy afternoon project turned into 3 hours of frustration and cursing. Am I missing something here as far as getting the old filter out and the new filter in ??.I doesn't go straight down or rearward and barely managed to scrap out sideways. Getting the new one in was even harder. There has to be an easier way...???

Lemme guess...RT/10, right? Welcome to the world of Gen 1 engine, Gen 2 suspension. The only way to do it is to have the car jacked up with the wheel suspended in the air. Doing an oil change over a "oil pit" won't work, as there won't be enough clearance to swap the filters as you mentioned. With the wheel suspended, the filter slips out through the suspension, but it can be a PITA to find the right spot. The new filter slips in the same spot. Next time, have a plastic bag with you, this way while you're fighting with the filter, all the oil can fall in the bag instead of on you and the frame. I can't remember exactly without looking under my car, but the spot where the filter slips out is close to where it screws on the car (right near the wheel). If you need any more help, PM me and I'll climb under my car with you on the phone and give you a more exact answer of where the "sweet spot" is for getting the filters off/on.

Thanks... next time I'm going to loosen the brake line from the chassis to give it that extra bit of room. This is the most insane filter setup I've seen.

Totally not needed. It can be finicky, but you can get the filter out without many problems and without having to disconnect or move anything. Just be sure the wheel is off the ground and hanging so its more of a gap for the filter to slip through.

No problems here and I don't need the wheel suspended. Do you have the 998 triangular gussets on backward?

I'd love to see a pic of your car, because something certainly doesn't sound right. Robzilla you've got a '00 and your experiencing problems? The filter drops straight out with no issues on my car, the only issue I've heard comes from the incorrect installation of the recall gussets.

I've had my recall checked and confirmed by a couple knowledgeable Viper folks that it IS done correctly. I am betting the OP has a 96' RT (not GTS). I asked the guy who trains GA Viper techs about my oil filter removal issues back in 05'. He said it is because the Gen 1.5s have a Gen 1 engine and Gen 2 suspension. Where the filters usually drop out easily in Gen 1's and 2's, there is a piece of the Gen 2 suspension that blocks this route on Gen 1.5s. The Gen 1 engine filter attaches in a different spot than Gen 2, but yet has Gen 2 suspension blocking where the filter should drop straight down. Hope this makes sense.

BINGO.... this is the problem. GENI filter mounting with GENII suspension. You've never eally scraped a knuckle till you do a GEN1.5 oil change..I think that loosening the brake line connector will make it much easier.
