99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

I am looking at a 99'GTs/ACR and was wondering if it is worth the extra$$ comparied to a 99'GTS. I will track the car at least 2 times a year but the rest will be just spirited driving and occational trips to the drag strip. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm selling my NSX to buy my first Viper. So any buying tips would also be helpful. I am a mechanic so looking the car over mechanically is not a problem. But any paticular trouble spots to look for? Thanks...

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

Hey Chris,
Good luck on the Viper. I recently faced the same decision. I've had an 02 Z06 for 2 years and took it to 2 road courses this year - what a blast! Be sure to get out there asap! I just got my 02 GTS Final Edition about a month ago and haven't had it on the road course or drag yet. My search was narrowed down to an 02 ACR or 02 GTS final edition. I went with the GTS based on the color scheme and overal drivability when not on the track.

I have not ever driver or been in an ACR, just several GTS's. Many say the ACR is extremely stiff and ******* street driving. I hope to take my GTS on the road course @ least once per year. I can easily make up the HP, and I actually prefer the GTS wheels. The ACR was a close call, based on the harnesses & suspension, though.

I suspect you'll get many helpful responses to this post!
Good luck - enjoy!!!

99 ACR shouldnt be a significant price difference then the 99 GTS. I personally think its worth the cost. You get the better BBS wheels, 5 point racing harnesses, the Smooth Tubes and Filters, Fully adjustable shocks, and the knowledge that your better then the GTS guys (ok just kidding (kind of) ;-)

Sweet color combo Jon. I really like the Graphite ACR w/ stripes (1 of 39, right?)

Great ride!

Mine is 1 of 22, since its GTS/ACR, Graphite, and silver stripes.

But thanks, yep, I love it, but currently someone is making me a mad offer to take it off my hands.. so she is probably going to go to a new home very shortly !! (if the deal goes through)

ACR if you're going to track it. It may start as 2 times a year but has a tendency to escalate.

I dont think the ACR is that much better then the GTS. No one really knows what to do with the adjustable shocks anyway. YOu can make up the 10 hp ... if you'd even know the difference. If you are serious about tracking the car get an '01. The ABS is what will help you on the track...ACR or GTS, ABS is clutch!

Lol, no one knows how to adjust them huh ? There is absolutely nothing special about me, I am a Project Manager, and cars are just a hobby for me, I easily adjusted my shocks including ride height (lowered the car at least 1/2 an inch), changed the rebound and dampening, and made adjustments for either track or street use. So sorry, I can NOT concure with you on that one. If your not afraid to experiment (document STOCK LOCATION FIRST), then ok you wont use it, but if you realize its just a car, not magic, and are willing to try to adjust the shocks, you will really enjoy the ride control/comfort that you can dial in.

Nice car Joe

I agree, very nice looking car especially without that VCA graphic behind your rear wheel. I am glad you decided to take it off! :p

Ahem... decal was put on after the pics.... although now removed as it'll be my template for showing you guys the other colors available!

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

I had the GTS. Now have the ACR. If I was doing long distance drives and daily driver maybe regular GTS. If going to drive weekends and track the car every so often the go with ACR.

Now days buying a preowned the $10,000 extra for a ACR really is not an issue so why not go with the car that has the extras for the same money. Alot of guys with standard GTS usually add these options later anyway. You just need to decide are going to want more of a racing suspension, a different and better looking wheel that is good for racing, five point seat belts as well as regular seat belts, and special badging indicating your car is something different and more rare.

AS far as the ride being different I would say just do a test drive in each and judge for yourself. I know I don't think its such a difference.

I'm glad I have the ACR over the standard GTS I use to have.

If the price difference isn't big, meaning a couple grand or so, then I would go with the ACR. The wheels, and 5pts alone are worth it in my opinion. But that's what I like about the ACR.

If you are not going to any serious mods to motor and piston and cam is not an issue, I would go for a even newer ACR. get 2002. Newest suspension, ABS and a warantee too.

If its going on the track go with acr. I have the gts and wish I would of bought a 2001/2002 ACR with abs for the track now.

I love my ACR. I have driven both. The ACR handles much better. For a couple thousand more I would say get the ACR if you can find one.

I personally don't like the style of the ACR wheels too busy looking. Plus they wouldn't show off my Eradi-Speed rotors as well as the high polished 5 spoke wheels which I feel are the best stlye to date. I agree if you can find an ACR for a few grand more buy it.

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

If the value of the ACR has dwindled to be so close to the GTS then it is probably worth it since adding the suspension upgrades would cost the small difference anyway.

I don't like the ACR wheels and would opt for something different.

Anyone know why the ACR's don't bring any real premium over the GTS?

I would say the same reason why you see people selling cars with $30,000 in mods for the same price! Who the hell really knows.

I think they look better on certain cars, not all. Silver, Black, or any color if they have the Silver stripes. I also have the Eradispeed's with Blue anodized hats and I have put both wheels on the car and more rotor shows with the BBS ACR wheels. :2tu:

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

I just love ACR's. If I hadn't found my car with it's special history, I would have gone with the ACR. Based on the viper build info, there were less than 1,000 ACR's ever built. About 229 in 01 and 159 in 02 if my memory is right. Sweet ride, very rare, possibly collectible and the best performing viper of it's time - what is not to love?

QUESTION GUYS-----
I'm new to the forum and don't know how to do an attachment to my post (like people did above with a pic of their car). Can someone plz tell me?

thx!

ACR's still bring a bit of a premium, but it's not what you'd expect. I think they will gain a lot of ground eventually. Mine is one of 22, so I'm hanging on to it!

ACR wheels are better as you can hide the road rash (inevitable in a Viper)with Wal-mart mag paint, and as far as future value between the two; just look how much first generation Camaros are worth with the Z-28 option compared to ones without.

99GTSACR

".the ACR handle much better."

Do you care to explain that a little more?

Is the ACR has more or less understear, overstear, more neutral, less weight transfer?
Are you talking street, track, smooth pavement, bumps, turn-in, ?
Are you driving the car 2/10, 5/10 ,10/10?

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

I don't think you go wrong either way........

I got both right now, to me, they're really two different cars...If that makes since! My wife won't ride in the ACR too much, something about "back problems" when shes in that car...sleeps like a baby in the GTS, proved that out the other day!
In her exact words..."I don't care what you do to this car, but, you better not f**k up the way this car rides!!"

Either way you go, you'll have a blast........

Peace!!

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

Bookmark this post, because my prediction is that 30 years from now, when we are taking the great grand kids to the Barret-Jackson-Daimler Auto Auction, you will see an un-modded 1999 ACR with under 10k miles sell for $250k, an un-modded 1999 GTS with low miles sell for $150k, and a DLM or Heffner car with some miles on it sell for $100k.

So my suggestion is if you are going to mod your car or actually drive it, get a GTS, but if you are going to keep it stock and not drive it so that it might be a collector item in the future, then buy an ACR car. It breaks my heart to see the ACR cars modded.

The car Handles bumps much better. The tires stay planted over bumps better. Also the shocks can be adjusted for track conditions unlike the stock GTS.

As far as oversteer/understeer that is more affected by the alignment. You can fine tune the turn-in with the shock adjustments.

Also another plus for the ACR is the very strong BBS wheels. They also look great :2tu:

Re: 99\'ACR vs 99\'gts which one?

Thanks guys, all the input is great. I think I will go with an ACR. I am going to look for a Silver one. I do plan to do mods to the motor. But only cams, rocker arms, heads, and exhaust. Nothing to take away from the original looks. It will be a weekend driver and occasional trips to work.
