I just met with the guy who was going to put the ACR stripe (in vinyl) on my Gen 3. He brought 4" tape and laid it out. The problem was the side edges of the vents...

In order to line the stripe up with the middle of the steering wheel, the stripe would line up over where the vents stop thus making the stripe not only follow the vents front to back, but up the side edge. He thought that would be next to impossible.

Back to square one... Painting would cost about $1,700... ughh.

I really want to add some type of stripe to this silver car, but now don't know what to do... I could get a Gen 4 hood, but then the cost really goes up as it would have to be painted, etc.

Any ideas? I am going to talk with Jon B and see what he thinks. Thanks.

Should I put one on my Gen 2?

Oh, I still don't understand about him not being able to cut the vinyl to work.

Can you try another vinyl guy?

I think I will have to make some contacts in Chicago. Where I live is just too small to find such specialists. I think that is my next move. I am going to contact the ILL VCA President who lives up there to see if he knows anyone.

Vinyl stripes will work however on the akward curves they may need to be applied wider than you want then CAREFULLY cut them in a straight line to match the rest. Clear bra guys do this all the time.

Vinyl decals and Viper should never be used in the same sentence. Sorry, but that is flat out cheap, and it never looks as good as paint does.

So a person paints it and maybe does not like it and then you are stuck with it or have to paint again... Also, with paint you can no longer turn it back to stock if you want to sell it. The Viper isn't that special of a car that you cannot put vinyl stripes on it. Get over yourself and your Viper.

Sorry I have to say that the factory painted stripes are the worst in the industry, heavy edges, they look like cheap vinyl. I'm just being real.

Thanks Zentenk! I see you have gone at great lengths to avoid the side edges of the vents, which was the issue. See, I live in a smaller city and we just don't have the vinyl experts around here. I am going to try to make some connections in the Chicago area or St. Louis (only 2 1/2 hours drive). There has to be someone in one of those two places that can do it. I may post another thread asking for vinyl applicators in the Chicago or St. Louis area. Thanks for your work! :) I may try the center "Fangs" stripe??? Gotta see who can do what first.

It may not go directly over the driver though, because the ACR stripe is not that close to the headlight.

You may want to check with John Gastman at Roanoke CJD( 309-923-7171 ) for help. They are a major Viper Dealer not that far from you---Dave

You have an SRT-10. You already know if you like the ACR stripe or not, since they are only shown in 100s of photos and you've probably seen one or two in person by now. It isn't like it is some huge risk to paint an ACR driver stripe, you aren't breaking new ground here. People (including myself) love that stripe, it won't hurt the value of your "isn't that special" 2003 convertible. Expect to pay $1000-1500 for a painted stripe, done well. It will look 100x nicer, and won't look so budget and cheap like a vinyl decal will. You will thank yourself later for painting it on, and having it look killer.

You may be right, Nine Ball. I am going to get some quotes. We have a couple real good custom paint shops around here. I would need some measurements from somewhere to take to them. Thanks. :)

I find it hilarious that some people are slamming vinyl stripes and talking about factory Viper stripes. The factory stripes on Gen IV Vipers are the worst out there. Period. They tape them off then spray and pull the tape. They are way too thick and the edges are ridiculous. Its always a pain in the ass applying clear bras over them because the edge is too thick. The 09 and 10s got a little better but for the money you pay for a Viper the stripes are pathetic.

There is some very high end vinyl out there that is very thin... thinner than paint once applied. In fact once applied they look just like paint. Just as you cant group all paint jobs together you cant group vinyl all in one group either. The trick is finding a quality installer that uses high end vinyl. Its not cheap but the results are very good and you can remove them in the future in case you want to change colors or go back to the original look. By the way there shouldn't be any problem going with the ACR style stripes on a Gen III hood. It just takes a little skill... which obviously the guy you went to doesn't have.

Those who are slamming vinyl stripes have obviously never seen a car with them properly installed. I have never had a single negative comment by anyone who's seen mine in person. In fact, I have had MANY comments that mine look BETTER than painted.

Besides the obvious benefit of being able to remove them, you can also do a true flat finish (mine are flat black). Painted on stripes can be done in flat but will still appear glossy when covered with clear. You just can't get the same visual effect that the flat vinyl stripes give.

georgethedog, you should check mine out in person before giving up on the vinyl plans, if you are over near the STL area.

Funny you say that. When my car was delivered I swore the stripes were vinyl because of the edges. Piss poor job.

I have vinyl on my car and its sweet. It was easy to install and the only way you can tell its vinyl is with your fingertip. I would do it again in a minute... and save a grand

give up the stripe idea paul.

look, if you have to go with vinyl, get yourself three big dolphin or unicorn stickers, and put them on those big flat areas on the hood and doors.

problem solved.
